Bird Strike
Well this is something I definitely don't want to go through again... I headed down to my sister's house on Lake Champlain NY to take some pics of her house and surrounding areas. Gorgeous day and the lake was calm and everyone was out and about. I took off from shore and parked the heli about 50' feet from shore at about 100' up. Everything was going great then all of a sudden BAM! out of blue the heli was hit by some attacking bird. Not sure if it was a hawk or what, but down comes heli in a cloud of feathers. I dive in to the water (was damn cold) then eventually find the heli about 10 feet down and drag it to shore. Left it sitting in the sun for the balance of the day thinking it's a total loss for all my electronics. Heli has at least 1 stripped servo, cracked main blades with blood smear on them and canopy had some long gashes in it (trashed). As depressed as I was I tried hooking up everthing after 24 hours to see what would happen. Power Jazz works fine...UBEC is working fine...HC is working fine....motor is running fine...receivers are working fine. I'm baffled but not complaining. Is it possible that nothing is damaged after sitting there 10 feet down for 15 minutes? Has anyone else ever heard of a bird strike on a heli? Still don't know if I should laugh or cry...
Canadian birds circle first then fly away...obviously the US birds have different rules of engagement.
..........there I was, out of altitude, airspeed, and ideas.......

Man sorry to hear that but glad everything is working!

Colombian birds don´t mess with helis, never had a single bird circle around or attack it. What about the bird, did it survive?

Bird was dead...I was going to try and bring it to shore to find out what it was but I was starting to freeze up in the water so I left it floating away. I just can't believe my electronics are still working, I don't understand that part. My G9 is still at the bottom of the lake unfortunately as I couldn't stay in the water any longer to find it...........there I was, out of altitude, airspeed, and ideas.......

I don't think the camera will survive, probably not even worth trying to rescue it.

That sucks

Power Jazz
Well the power jazz is advertised as being waterproof IIRC so I guess it's not a huge surprise that it survived with everything being nicely encased in that epoxy brick
Maybe you need to step up to 800mm blades to have a chance against the opposition?

LOL...Need to increase blade size and also find out if there's something like an anti-aircraft BB gun The bird never even hesitated nor did it hit it from above which I thought was kinda strange. Guess it really wanted to get at my yellow canopy...........there I was, out of altitude, airspeed, and ideas.......

Sorry to hear about the bird strike. Glad you were able to recover most of your equipment and it still works.

I'm wondering if electrics are more prone to bird strikes due to their relatively quiet running. Anyone ever had a bird attack their gasser or nitro?

You might get the camera and send it in to Canon. I've had them repair a G9 that got wet, but not from salt water. All the boards start corrodeing almost instantly. They don't charge if they can't fix it, so its worth sending in.

Edit: Duh, Lake Champlain is fresh water- thanks Wikipedia

Hopefully Canon can do something about the camera...if I can ever find it.

Hey Nooobs....any chance you can make me some kind of device to fire off chaf or flares for the next time I go flying there? I may need to take pics from now on with circling gunships.

(or a cat strapped to my skids...)

I hope Torsten chimes in...I'd love to know if Germany still uses those transparent tanks for training. Was wild to see a see-thru tank while dug in. Guess you can't drive around in those naked without suffering intentional FF.

On a more serious note...should I be concerned about my electronics, or do I just say a Hail Mary and put it all behind me?

Glad you were able to swim out there and get it, I hate cold water...it might have stayed down there if it was mine.
