I have a Futaba S9254 servo mounted on my tail. When I first power on the heli the servo seems to move slowly then speeds up as I cycle it through a few times. Could the engine exhaust be gumming up the gears or is the servo failing?

check all your trims (sub and tranmitter) and if those are not it them you may have goo'ed it up.

It sure sounds like it's fueled up inside the servo. None of my tail servos have ever had to loosen up to get to top speed. It's telling you something is not right. I'd listen and replace it.

I have a tail mounted 9254 on an EVO50 that seems to be gooped up or something else wrong. It needs a replacement before the heli can fly again. My servo is acting odd and making a crunching noise. I'm not sure if it's fuel soaked finally or bad gears from throwing a tail grip. Thing is, it was fine for a bunch of flights after flipping the grip and gets super wet just about every flight.

I've never liked the tail mounted servo set up because of it getting fueled up all the time.

send it into the Futaba service center. they can bench test it and check for any problems. if there is something wrong, they can either repair it, or replace it at cost. its well worth not crashing.

This is killing me! Just gummed up another 9254. These servos don't do well mounted on the boom. Will the JR8900 servo mounted on the boom hold up to fuel exhaust better then 9254? Maybe its time to get a vibe 50.

Did you use it at 4.8 volt? 9254 can be used only at 4.8 volt. I broke two 9254s with 6.0 volt, it cost me 7720 yen to repair.

I connected the hanger 9 digital servo tester and I have 4.8 volts to the servo. I thought after installing two servos I should at least verify the regulator is in fact putting 4.8 volts to the servo. I had a 9254 that I had stripped the gears in and took the gears from the bad servo and rebuilt it. I RTV'ed the matting surfaces and hopefully that will solve the problem. Thanks for the suggestion.

Is this servo on your Raptor? If it is, the kit should have come with the necessary parts to install the tail servo up front on the servo pod. This would require you to remove the push-pull collective and go with just a straight link to the collective arm. When I had my Raptor I did this to get the tail servo off the boom and under the canopy away from exhaust residue.

Hi,

The 9254 is known for failing after a period of time (and NO, I'm not knocking them - I love Futaba tail hardware).

I had one fail recently and a pal of mine had two fail. They seem to start with the odd glitch and that's a warning you need to heed. It won't be long before it pack's up altogether! Just make sure it's not in flight

I have replaced mine with BLS251's now and feel more secure!

3D?? No - just another input error!!!

I just sent a 9254 to Hobby Services for repair due to fuel exposure on the boom. The estimate of work and recommended method of repair was to replace the fuel damaged servo with a new one... $100.
It breaks down like this, $80 for a replacement servo at cost, $9.99 estimate, $9.99 S&H for a total of $99.98. To say the least, I'm not too thrilled of the outcome.

I gotta say, if you just burned up 3 servos then theres something else wrong, not the fuel. Make sure your not binding on full deflection. Make sure the tail control rod can move freely disconnected from the servo. Make sure your tail control rod guides arent sliding up close to the servo and causeing binding in the air. make sure your running the servo on 4.8v and that its plugged in properly. Make sure your gain isnt high enough to kill your servo, and make sure the 401/770 is in the DS mode.

thats a good start

TankDirt my gain is 80/41. Tail centers when I turn it on. The tail rod moves freely and I have 4.8 volts to the servo. 401 is set to DS. I'm using a Fromeco regulator. I agree with you something else must be wrong but what? I'm lost. Thanks for the suggestions.
