I was thinking about getting a 12fg as a backup. Is the programming like the same? or how similar are they as far as programming.

Same basic menu structure and many shared features.

The main thing is the 12FG and 12Z have info on several pages because their screen size is smaller than a 14MZ.

You'll be able to easily hop back and forth with the 12FG as a backup.

The 12FG is missing some features that the 12Z and 14MZ has. One example is it has a smaller number of curve types for throttle and pitch, but it's going to have more than everything that a 3D heli pilot will need, great radio (all three actually, I love my 12Z).
