Following on from the discussion in the Main Topics section about petty theft at model shows, I've often wondered why US houses have their mail boxes on posts at the edge of the property. Do passers-by steal the mail or torch them ? Here in the UK, if stuff isn't screwed down it will get nicked

A guy at work, who has returned after 4 years in the US, said that petty crimes don't exist in the US. He said the criminals skip this phase of their development and go straight to armed robbery and GTA Is this right ?

Just wondering about the social differences between the UK and the US

The mail boxes are along the streets in the suburbs so the mailman can drive right up to each one and put the mail in. The houses are farther from the street and spreadout more than in the city. He doesn't have to get out of the truck. It's faster and more efficent. My mailman won't drive on anyone's property and when he does have to get out of the truck he has to shut the engine off, set the parking brake, turn the wheels to the curb and lock up the truck even if he is only going 10ft away from the truck. He said it was the postal rules. In my neighborhood over the years (sporadically) we have had kids who just got their drivers license and think it is fun to drive by and smash them with a baseball bat or at 4th of July blow them up with a block buster or M80. Juvenile stuff. They don't steal the mail though. - Kris

You will find that there is mail theft here in the USA. It is not a petty theft though it is a federal offense. In the citys there are lots of low lifes that like to steal pensioners checks its pretty commen to be honest. In the rual areas we do have som eissues with stupid kids or 40 year old adolescents that like to drink to much bash in mail boxes with baseball bats but mail theft dont happen much in the rual areas at least in my area.

Mostly ID theft from mailboxes but the garbage bag is just as much of an issue unless we shred or burn everything with personal information on it

protected criminals
It's because your criminals are so well protected in your legal system and the government sucks and protects the poor. And before you get all huffy about my comment, we are hot on your heels and will look the same in 5-10 years. In our news locally a guy killed his wife on the honey moon and got one year for premeditated murder.

As far as petty theft at RC shows. I have had tons of hobbies, drag cars, quads, guns, boating, etc... and to date this is the most honest hobby I have ever been in. At the field I have left everything there to go get lunch or get more "refreshments" and never thought twice about my stuff. I will say though that I have seen the beginnings of some "lower standard" people showing up. I think it might be the low entry level prices into the hobby?

Are you kidding me!?! This is America, no one walks anymore. I guess it would be easier if we had those funny cars with the steering wheel on the wrong side.

This wouldn't happen to be the guy who let his wife drown in Australia would it?
