For, *ahem*, purely theoretical reasons, does anyone know a reliable test that would differentiate between methanol and nitromethane? Such a test could be really useful if one was to, say, come across an unmarked container that could be either...

Just wondering...

Boiling point.

Methanol boils at 64.7C (148F).

Nitormethane boils at 100 - 103C (212- 217F).

Ok, that's pretty clear - thanks for the info.

I would assume gaseous methanol or nitromethane is pretty unpleasant stuff. But then I only need to heat it to 65C and then stop immediately if it's boiling (or even if it isn't and the temp continues to rise).

Its easier than that. Just weight it. Methanol is extremely light and nitromethane extremely heavy.

Methanol = 800gr per litre
Nitromethane = 1195gr per litre

A gallon of methanol = 3.78 * 800 = 3024gr
a gallon of Nitro = 3.78 * 1195 = 4517gr

If you can't tell a difference of 1.5kg per gallon, you have other problems

That's even easier (and safer). Thanks
