is it really OK to run 7.4V through a servo that's only rated for 6v max? What bad things can happen by doing this? Can I do this with any servo rated @ 6V?

Works fine all the way to the impact site. Seriously though, I've been using 8717s this way for a while with no issues at all. Electronics can fail at any time though. So, the real question is: Can you accept the risk, which I think is fairly low? Regarding other servos, your risk would be much higher on something that has not been time tested yet.

7.4 is not what you will be running them on its more like 8 becuse when fully charged they tend to be around 8.4 volts but either way they are fine . if they do burn up they are not going to replace them under warrenty becuase you have ran them on 8 volts but they do work well i have them in a 600 and have over 150 flights on these servos and are still going strong.

I know I used lock tight why did my head explode

HOWEVER, people have been running them like this for quite a while now, and failures are pretty rare considering how many people use this servo.
