Hey guys,
Just found out that somehow i cracked my lower side frames on my raven. lasted 4 1/2 years. guess thats pretty good. Anyway i am out of tail gears and i was going to buy some spare replacements and saw the metal tail gears. Are these any good? anything to watch out for?

thanks

PlasticTail gears strip easy and are cheap, they protect the dog bones and TT from damage. A good weak link if you will....

+1
I have the metal gears and don't use them for the same reasons

The plastic does last a long time and it will break before the major do

When I was first learning to fly helis I went to the metal gears and it has saved me lots of money. I still run them have no issues with them and feel it is a worthy upgrade. The plastic gears if I just touched the ground with the tail rotor any it would take them out with the metal ones I havnt lost tail gears or a main ever.

for me it is always the crown gear that takes the beating when the tail touches.

fwiw, I found the metal tail gears run smoother than the plastic ones. And as an added bonus (imho), if you plant the tail in an auto or whatever, the crown gear blows out instead of the tail gears. imho it's quicker and easier to swap out the crown than the tail gears.

the metal gears are helical cut, they will naturally be smoother and quieter, just not as efficient. but i have a small hole drilled into the tail case where i use a needle tip on a grease gun to inject grease into the tail. then i use an M3 set screw to plug the hole.

the tail case on my 90 gets pretty warm after a flight. i havnt checked with the 50 yet though.
