When I had the gyro mounted at the back I ended up changing the gyro pad quite regularly. This was because it would get soaked in fuel during backwards flying. Now I have it mounted up front using the align gyro mount,130 plus flights and still the pad is as good as new

Just get the align gyro mount, it stiffens up the frame a bit too.

I Have mine mounted on top of the cyclic servos up front. The plate that is there came with my NSP version. Im running the JR770, (tall Gyro) and it fits under the canopy just fine.
