So was going to fly the 5th flight on the rave yesterday in between flying the 700n and had a little problem with the tp esc. Plugged the battery in and the esc put out a little smoke so I quickly unplugged it. I removed it from the rave and looked it all over and everything looked fine. I reinstalled it temporarily just to see what happened. I plugged the battery in and seemed fine, all servos were working, as soon as I touched the throttle the thing started smoking and I immediately removed it. Anyone had a similar problem? I'm hoping they're replace it, it probably only has 20-30 flights on it.

merlin, could you post your setup? this thread might help if we see a pattern of setup and failure with this esc. include motor, blades, servos, gyro, battery, pitch etc.

motor is -8 on 4s. I just switched the servos out from 65mg's to 285mg's and only have like 6 flights on them. Also just put a 3500g in it with a mini g.

i wonder if the scorpion 8 may have led to the failure of the esc. as the 8 gets older it may draw even more amps then its rating (45amps) which may lead to this. we may find that the esc fails before the motor in certain cases. you may also need to eagletree your setup to determine your amp load. how many flights do you have on the 8?

I am running the exact same setup. TP40 with -8 on 4S, 285mgs, Mini-G and 3500G. I have around 60 flights on mine so far without any ESC or heat problems.

I'd recommend sending your TP40 back in. I'll bet they'll replace it!

And I recomment not using TP at all(just my2cent)
Replacing they always do ..because i guess they know what they sell

I remember a few years back the craze for their lipos ...What a rippoff!!! marketing hype a'la Align ..hence never again a TP product

get a Hobbywing 40A esc ..Just as good ..and dont burn

the tp 40 ran awesome right up until this and they're a lot of people using them without problems. Also as far as I know, the tp 40 is one of the only esc's you can 4 cell on and not use a seperate bec.

I think the TP40 is a great ESC and just because one went bad doesn't mean anything is wrong with the design or manufacturing of a product.

And I also don't think what might have happened years ago (with another product) has any measure of what todays products hold.

You won't be dragging my TP40 away from me, Ha, Ha....

Well you fly it then and be happy Not my intention to take it away from you ...Its as always all about perception
And I also don't think what might have happened years ago (with another product) has any measure of what todays products hold.
Yep it has ...You ripp me off once ..maybe... but not again ...Years ago or not ..Its called american marketing hype perfectly adapted these days by Align . Counting on statements like yours above ...The sheep forget, so just release V2

Have a look ..doesnt look remotely like the china esc heh ?
Look at the programming card ..You get this with many China esc
So TP gets it made slightly different colour ..Imports it sticks a TP sticker on and tells you its a superior esc ...
So you go for it my son ..But most of all HAVE FUN

Mine Scorpion 60amp esc got hot and popped th resistors. I didn't bother to check it again and have send it in for repairs. I setting up the servoes only on the bench when it happened.

When any electronics starts to smoke or here something freid, why take the chance and use it. It will only cause more problems later.

well I sent in an rma request online to thunder power a couple days ago so waiting to hear from them. I'm going to put in a scorpion 60 amp heli esc temporarily that I'm borrowing from a friend to try out.

the scorpion should work fine. i would however step down the 3500g tail servo. that esc is sending 6v to the servos and when i first built my rave i fried a 3500g before i even got it in the air.

great, this is why i was using a tp40 esc, because it seems like with every other esc you either have to run a seperate bec or step down.
