This was sent to me from a buddy and I thought it would be good to post it as to remind us how dangerous these lipo batteries can be.

Just a caution to all of you who play with Lipo's

Hello
I hope this email finds you in good health and spirits. Well
I went flying today and went into my car to charge a battery
like I've done a hundred times before. I hooked my battery
up to the charger as usual and plugged in the balancer and
set the charger to about 1,000 mh's it was a 2100mh lipo
battery. So I went out of my van to talk to Gray Neil and
about 3 or 4 minutes later so one yelled out that their was
a fire in my car. I looked over at my car and theirs was
flames coming out of the passenger front window. And then
all hell broke out. The three lipo batteries in the front
seat began to explode, then the car battery exploded the
tires exploded the gas tank exploded the flames shot up and
out thirty feet in the air. That caught the car
cover/carport on fire too. The good news is that their is a
fire house 5 hundred feet away the bad new is their was no
one their. So my car burned 15 to twenty minutes before the
fire trucks arrived. Well my car is a total loss.

So my the lesson in this story is don't charge your lipo
batteries unattended and maybe not charge them in your car
either. I hope you all don't have to learn the hard way like
me. The news people from channel 12 was their so I am sure
you'll be seeing me on the news tonight and probable the
hole weekend with my luck. You all have a nice weekend and
be safe and oh yes I am ok but my nerve's are shoot.

Well see, that is the unfortunate side of these events, mass hysteria. This event was a VERY rare occurrence. The chances of this happening to you are probably 1 in 1,000,000. You have a much higher chance of getting hit by a car on the way to the field totaling your car then a lipo fire.

Oh great I can see it now, the nitro zealots just can't wait to comment. Let the fear mongering begin.

On a serious note, sorry to hear about your car and glad nobody was hurt. What chargers and what batteries?

I don't know about the sealed bag. Needs to be open so not build up pressure but let out the gasses unless you want a bomb.

Well, I fly nitro and until you said that I didn't see a single thing that pointed to him flying Electric over Nitro. He Said it was a lipo and it was 2100mah, he didn't say if it was a 2 or 3 cell. I fly a 2 cell lipo in my nitros and it could have hit me as well as an electric only pilot.

If any nitro guy tries to make an argument out of this, just point that out.

I'm really sorry about your loss, that fire looks pretty intense and the van... wow. BUT, nobody got hurt so life goes on.

Anyone see where I left my liposac?

Mutt - it's one of those things; if you're numbers up, then it's up. The only battery fire I have had was when trickle charging some AA nicads. However, paranoia is paranoia and a fire can fcuk up your life resulting in some well earnt respect.

Yug I am not paranoid I just do not like lipos never have never will and I myself personal opinion do not like using them for a rx battery on a nitro or gasser heli. I have the right to my opinion or are you now of the same idea as some now that no one has a right to a opinion unless it matches thiers? I hope not you never been that way before. I dont like lipos what is that such a issue for some of you people? and here it is again another person lost thier vehicle due to one. Sorry if I have to be in atendace and keep my eye on a battery like they say to with a lipo I just cant see a use for it. I will stick with my nicads. seen 2 fires with nicads 30 years ago give or take seen in person 15 lipo fires and lots online sorry to me lipos suck just my opinion. Last time I am defending the right to my opinin. No mass hysteria here no paranoia I dont like them pretty simple.

Ha Ghost, Thanks for posting this I think every body should understand how Dangerous these Lipos are. I have seen first hand a buddy of mine several years ago have a three cell Lipo blow up under the hood of his Cadillac Escalade. If we wern't there within 15 second's it would have burnt to the ground. And looked like the Van in the photo's.

Mutt, everything you say is fair and you are right. I agree lipos are dangerous for sure. I'm not out to challenge your opinion in any way. My line in the sand is just in a different spot than yours, other guys go farther than me and I would guess you see me like I see them. I certainly don't want to give you the impression I was attacking you or your points in any way.

My whole thing was the electric vs. nitro flame war someone suggested might come of it. It's perfectly feasable that a guy could fly electric on chemestry other than lipo just as a nitro guy could fly a lipo over other chemestry.

I really do have a liposac, I got it because I agree with you more than disagree, even if I do use lipos myself. I guess my view is that it is a risk but it's a managable one.

Cheers and have a great day,

-eSmith.

Hey man, I was not being heavy, just stating my personal experience and paranoia. I too do not like lipos due to their bad press but that has not prevented me from using them with great caution with respect to safety for life and property.
Crikey, I even charge my electric cigarette outside on a concrete slab if I am not present.
Everything electrical is capable of faliure and possible fire. Any car journey you make is potentially catastrophic, etc etc which is why I mentioned the numbers up thing. Hell, I'm in the middle of trying to quit smoking due to possible cancer scares; it's a numbers thing from the perspective of the greater powers that be.
Not gonna say nowt about mobile phones

Thing is esmith I am not trying to start a damn war ALL I stated it just comfirms my feels about lipos but some of these people feel I am not entitled to my opinions. I myself could care less what a person flys not my business or problem. But I sure cant seem to understand why some thing i am paranoid or mass hysteria just because someone DONT like a certian thing It is like I said I guess no one is entitled to thier own opinon on something uless it is the same as certian others are which is a crock of crap in my book. Last post unsubscribed and Just not gonna waste my time replying to nothing more here due to certian people.
