We should send a copy to the FAA.

Maybe they'll want to ban fireworks next.

Hey nitro guys need a little help. Changing my bearings and I have successfully removed the piston woohoo. Does the piston look ok some minor scratching should I change it ordered a new piston ring that I will install and the cylinder liner looks fine aside from some blueing from heat.

It's fine. New ring and good sleeve. Remember to align the gap in he ring, little pin at the top of the cylinder, etc... correctly

All bearing in the tail have been replaced.....smoooooth!

Scott glad to hear the tail is in good order now. Re the nitro comment above, are you saying the sleeve should be replace too or just look at the sleeve and make sure it is good. I would hope the sleeve would last a number of ring replacements unless there was a significant scratch.

Is it common to scuff the sleeve (600 grit or so with oil) to help break / seat the new ring?

If the sleeve is good, just replace the ring so the compression is not altered. No need to "prep" a new sleeve.Compass 7HV, Trex 550E

Sorry to hear! there isn't a trick, I use mobile one synthetic oil and gently push it down over the piston, if the ring broke it may have not been aligned with the piston pin allowing it to compress completely to the sleeve.

@NewguyRich Where was the piston positioned at Top dead center or bottom dead center? it should have been bottom dead center.

Make sure the piston is at bottom dead center. I have a piston locking tool you can use to hold the crank from turning while inserting the sleeve.

Thanks Saul, beat me to it.

No need to "prep" a new sleeve.
I was wondering if you needed to prep the *old* sleeve to mate with new ring. We used to do this with kart engines (100cc, nitro and methanol with pipes turning 16k RPM...basically big r/c engines)
