@Rich, I don't know where they plan to site the panels. I just dropped it someplace reasonable for size comparison purposes.

Ran across the same article.

http://newcity.patch.com/groups/pol...d-be-role-model

If it works out to be a profitable investment for the town they may want to add capacity. This is just speculation. I would hope they consider trying to support our hobby by continuing to let us fly with what is left.

Rich looks like speed runs will be on the west field.

The town people aka home owners wont pay less the town and municipalities will profit by paying less per kwh in the long run. Clarkstown doesnt own the solar field, it is owned and operated by Onforce Solar who will profit from the sale of renewable energy.

Well, the town's revenue is taxes so any savings to the town is a savings to the tax payers...in theory.

The article I read said that ownership of the solar field will revert to the town after 20 years. Of course the solar panels become less effective with age so I'm not sure what benefit that will be. I would be interesting to see the financial models relating to this deal. $4mm savings over 30 years isn't much especially since the last 10 years is 100% owned by the town (so 'free' electricity).

I have looked at solar for our house and the payback isn't there. I have seen plenty of creative accounting / optimistic assumptions used to justify projects in my day. Hopefully they looked at the numbers with a very critical eye.

As it should be, right? They should be looking out for the benefit of the town and their residence. Unfortunately we will be low on that list.

Well lets not carried away by all this.
Lets just continue to do our part to take care of what we do have up there.
Just be mindful if you are flying and there is a work crew down on the field do not fly in their direction.

Ed, where is the re-located planker runway?
Does it impact our side? If so, why does Joe have the authority to make that unilateral decision?

The new runway is our east side field!

Just kidding. Our side will not be affected any more than it has in the past with the sporadic flyover. Depending on how far up the solar panels come. We may have to tighten up how far north we fly on the east field. Once we get a better visual on where they end, we will spend some time having a spotter verify what is to far out and go from there.

Joe is only the messenger.
The airplane pilots are re-positioning their runway to be proactive. Keeping away from the workers and future location of the panels. They fly during working hours at the field on weekdays.

Ed - I understand that. His message was a little more "I decided to do this..."

Tightening up our field is better than no field. Good practice for fun flies.

As I understand it, they are going back to the same runway they used to use ( facing South from their parking lot) before we were moved out to where we are now, So it should be as Ed has mentioned no more than the few stays, However on our side the East field is definitely useable with restrictions, there is a second birm down the hill there before the road going South to North we should not be passing this point unless we are on the southern half of the field, there is no reason why this could not work out for us. this is what Bob Greenberg has communicated with me about on Sat when I was up there and they came over. So I wouldn't worry about our side as this change really affect the fixed wing runway much more than us. Just be mind full of where and how far out your aircraft is while flying on the East field, if you feel you need a spotter until you get the hang of it don't be afraid to ask someone we always help each other out when needed this is no different.

Saul.
