That's the one. Thanks for finding it. Don't think it was the smartest thing to do (just my opinion). But was nice to see the RC hobby get exposure.

For those of you that have the 4010 Duo. Read this thread starting on page 80 post 1188.

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...1801512&page=80

I have a bad balance circuit on channel 1 cell 2. Thought it was a bad pack but have ruled that out. Good thing I keep an eye on the charging process. If this was left unattended it could have been a potential issue depending on how you have it configuired.

It does not get any better after this post.
I'm in total disbelief...

I just had my backup 4010 die while waiting for the replacement for my other 4010 that died last week! The charger that just died was the replacement for my previous 4010 that died back in June.

I had just finished up storage charging some packs-- 2x 2S 4000 packs on channel 1 and 2x 2S 500 packs on channel 2. I was working on my heli on the bench next to the charger-- about 2 minutes after the charger beeped for end of charge I was still working on the heli... at that point the charger spontaneously rebooted itself once, then powered back up for a moment showing a "low input voltage" warning and then the screen went dead and the power supplies went into protection mode.

I yanked the batteries off the charger as fast as I could. None of the main leads or balancer leads were hot and there were no sparks when disconnecting the packs so unlike the 4010 that died last week this charger didn't short the output ports when it died.

Now the charger will no longer power up, if I try powering it up the power supplies immediately go into protection mode. Disconnect the charger and the power supplies work perfectly.

After tonight's casualty I've had 3 4010's fail since March, including two failing in less than a week-- the one that just died is only 3 months old.

Not a very good track record, the new FMA Powerlab 8x2 is looking better and better...

Guess I get to call Progressive RC again tomorrow morning... I just talked to them Monday morning to exchange my 4010 that died last week!

Anyone want to place a bet on how long the replacement 4010 that I'll be receiving either tomorrow or Thursday will last? LOL!

possibly, the cause
Junsi is recommending not using *any* kind of series connected power supplies because in the event one of the series supplies faults and shuts off during a charge the sudden drop in voltage supplied to the charger and corresponding increase in amperage demand will likely kill the charger.

Their suggestion in their post is that if you are using series connected power supplies to set the input amperage limit of the charger well below the power supply maximum amperage to hopefully avoid tripping one of the power supplies into protection mode from overcurrent which would cause the charger to fail. While that is a good safety suggestion (run the power supplies at much less than their rated maximum to hopefully avoid a shutdown) it still won't save the charger if one of the power supplies in the series fails for other reasons.

While the series power supplies do work well and are inexpensive a single larger power supply is always going to be the safest and most reliable option-- unfortunately high power single power supplies are expensive.
