Sorry I missed you Scott.

I showed up about 1/2hr after you left, waited a hour or so, no one showed and then I left.

I ended up fly by my house, on a soccer field. No wind, just cold.

What a bunch of girls!

I was there at 11:15. Hung around until 12:25 then left. I charged up two packs so I flew them in my office parking lot - just practiced orientations as ther is no much room to fly.

Was a shame. The field was sunny and not bad - we've flown in colder. With the sun shining, it was actually nice. No wind, blue skies, perfect day wated....oh well.

I showed up about 12:30, called Scott and he already left.

I ended up flying at a soccer field to trim and tune the Vigor 90....about 3/4ths of a tank I turned the gov on for 1800 rpm then something white flaky thing came flying off and didn't think much of it until a few seconds later I heard a grinding noise about 20 ft up, landed hard and broke the skids. Saw the tail rotor cut its own fin off!
Only one of the tail blade has chewed up leading edge and the other looks fine. Somehow the gearbox rotated on its own and let the tail rotor cut its own fin off. I checked the tail clamp bolt and it was sung but not tight as I excepted it to be. I think the harmonic vibration caused this.

Looks like its just the tail fin and the white tail drive bevel gear chewed up. I have an spare bevel gear on hand, ordered the skids and tail fin.

This is right after hard landing, blades still spooling down, half of tail fin cut off

Blades stopped, note the tail scrape marks in the grass

Bevel gear shavings

I didn't get to fly my MA helis...too cold out for my fingers after one flight!

I should hope not...the fin is attached to the case in question, if in fact the fin that is attached to the case isn't rotating with the case you need to get that heli to the circus or a good exorcist.

Can't tell as no close up shots but the grub screw for the pitch slider probably backed out or the dog bones came loose
note the tail scrape marks in the grass
Who am I noting this for the NTSB? Ahhh I just playin with you

Sorry for your loss, good luck

Chris, it sounds like the 4 3x3 set screws were loose allowing the gear case to rotate.
If you need, I have a vertical fin you can have.

My plans were changed so I was unable to make it to the field yesterday. I ended up running around all morning.

The forward fin clamp was secure and tight, the clamp on the back was sung but not tight. The CF fin was twisted to the left. I could not rotate the gearbox back into position by hand, after I loosen the clamp and removed the grub screws, it was able to be repositioned.

The vertical fin, is it an JR vigor cs fin?

Check the balance of the tail. A high frequency vibe will greatly reduce the clamping effect of the tail box. If it is torque tube type tail once adjusted pin the front and rear of the boom.

Just 2 cents.

It's an torque tube type tail. The tail blades are EcoPower 105mm from amainhobbies.com
I will be checking the balance on the next pair that's going on.

It's strange that one tail blade leading edge is missing paint and chucks of CF while the other tail blade looks fine and can be used again.

I will look into how to pin the tail, gonna have to look at it and may be drilling a small hole from the clamp, thru one side of the tail boom and a little into the plastic gearbox and use an small servo mounting screw (although shorted) to lock it.

Dude...c'mon...really and don't take this the wrong way and all, I mean we haven't met and I'm sure your fun to hang with and all but...

Dude, you list your occupation as "airline aircraft maintenance"

PLEASEtell me your the dude who sews the cushions together, cause otherwise I'm gonna leave for the emergency room right now hopefully before my head explodes, I mean I like my upstairs neighbors and I'd hate to have them endure that mandatory 3 days of stink before they call the cops only to find me dead in front of the computer with this giant smile on my face, I can't stop laughing now as it is.

Oh BTW what airline do you work for?

I haven't updated it until you mentioned it now. I was promoted 2 years ago.

I check the tires air pressure on the planes

Really just an line maintenance supervisor job. Whatever happens at the gate, it gets either deferred or fixed depending on available time.
