I have an extra Hawk lying around. I was thinking of turning it into an electric. I've been looking around on Runryder and found people using Joker 20-24 tooth pinion gears. I can't find any and if I do does it fit the 5mm motor shaft? what about the Mikado's 20 tooth pinion gear? it does fit the 5mm shaft. but, i'm not sure if the teeth are too small. any ideas would be awesome.

I just finished converting a Hawk and ran into the same problem. Good luck finding one. I tried to order a new one and posted want ads in three different forums. I ended up with a Stock Drive Products pinion. I lightened it and used two set screws with an 8 to 5 mm bore reducer.
I don't have much time on it - 10 flights maybe- but so far is is working good.

What kind of head speed do you think I would get if I used a 14 tooth pinion? I have the 14 tooth speed up gear and the grey gear.

Need to know what motor and batteries you want to use. Not sure how to link a to another thread on RR but there is one called "Gear ratio for a Hawk Pro on Bell 47 HELP PLEASE". That should get you started in the right direction.

I was thinking of using the Century 800kv motor w/ 8s lipo. I was just curious what kind of RPM at the head would I get if I use the 14tooth pinion gear from Century (thats the largest). I have a Swift 16 with 10 tooth and the tooth seems to mesh pretty good with the counter gear on the hawk. I just don't know how fast the motor spins compared to the nitro engine.

I just want to know if I can get a descent head speed with 14 tooth electric powered.

That Bell 47 link was most helpful.

now I need to look for a motor that is 1100kV that can handle 8s lipo.

I am using a Tango 45-08 (800kv) on 8s with 20 tooth pinon and got 1700 on a fresh battery. I think it drops to about 1600 after 5 mins. It depends on your batteries and actual KV of the motor

(Motor Kv x V x .8) / (53/p x 60/13) = head speed

This is the pinion that I used at http://sdp-si.com/
S10T10M020S1008 20 T, MOD 1.0, 10 MM face, 8 mm bore
I turned the hub down because it was very thick - only about 3/4 of the teeth ground off. I think I took 2 or 3 mm off and drilled a second set screw hole.
I used a bore reducer to mount to a 5 mm shaft.
A7A30M080516
I drilled a hole through the reducer so that my long set screw would contact the motor shaft flat spot and used a short set screw to contact the reducer 90 deg from the slot.
$18 + shipping.

If you PM you email address I can send some pics.

The newer style joker pinion is not what you want. It has a 5 mm face. Ask me how I found out. You are driving a gear with a 7 mm face so you will want one with at least 8 mm. You want the original Joker pinion - cant remember part number. Call them first. They were unable to get me one as was Joker USA.

Can you post any pics of your conversion ?. Particularly how you mounted your motor. I also have a Hawk Pro gathering dust.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

you are right svenaslav.had that pinion saved for a stretched hawk in a 500e fuselage.might consider timing belt first stage now.

J0398S -20T Motor Stainless Steel Gear/Pinion (Mode 1.0) (5mm motor shaft)

20T Stainless Steel Pinion Gear for 5mm dia motor shaft motor.

Inner Diameter 5mm, outer dia. , teeth height 0.25 inc and overall height

You don't think this will work?

The pinion gear for my swift is a 1.0 and it meshes pretty good with the counter gear on the Hawk. Maybe the joker gear is not wide enough?

The mesh is fine but I don't think you are going to want to drive a plastic gear with a shorter faced metal gear. The counter gear is slightly more that .25 in. I wanted a little wiggle room for adjustability. Also the set screw in that gear is tiny. I not saying it won't work at all it is just not the best application.

Check the battery/motor/esc classified section. There is a Tango 45-08 and a CC45-HV with Sport BEC for sale.

Gyro Freak
See gallery for pics. Don't be to harsh as this is a work in progress and I am still working on final placement and attachment of components.
Feel free to offer suggestions though.

Thanks for the pics. Good job, I will continue to follow this and maybe I will bring my Hawk out of retirement. I'm currently streching a Razor600E to run 710mm blades.

I did this a while back and thinking i might re-convert for a 222 fuse that is floating around.
My set up was: Align 650xl motor, align 75a esc, 6s lipo, with the stock Hawk pinion turned upside down.
I mounted the motor with the stock 600 mount, and small spacers i turned on the lathe. I had to drill the pro frames and drove the counter gear just as the engine would have. With the speed up counter pinion, stock black gear, black counter gear, and stock pnion i had around the 17:1 that i wanted.
I have some pics if i find i'll post em. It flew pretty well, but i never had the time to keep after it. I got my 90 and sold it soon after, and just recently bought it back.

HPI Racing Pinion Gear 20 Tooth 1M/5mm shaft savage flx

What do you guys think about this pinion gear? I may just go to my local Hobby Shop and see if they have this pinion gear. I'm just not sure if the teeth are wide enough for more surface area.

I emailed Robinson Racing Products on a similar gear (RRP1220) and it was .23 in. This one looks to be the same. You could call Tower. I had also emailed HPI on this gear and they said they no longer produce it.
