A BEC is simply an ESC without the speed control part. It's a fancy name for a voltage regulator. Your ESC has one built-in.

For setting up your heli, save some money, forget the BEC, just go pick up a standard 4-cell receiver battery from your local hobby shop. Nicad, NiMh, it doesn't matter. You simply need to power the electronics.

Don't know WHY your ESC went up in smoke, there are many reasons.

It's safest just to unplug all three wires going to the motor.

If you had a servo stalled (trying to move but mechanically it was bound up), that will let smoke out of the ESC (and possibly servo) real fast.

Bummer man. I always use a small JR 400 mAh NiMH pack to set up my electronics. As Dood said, it is a much safer way to ensure that there is no chance of an accidental spool up. Then you can focus on what you are doing without worrying about the motor. I always do everything including bind the Tx, setup the servos and all before I plug up the ESC and motor and setup the ESC. This is after the Tx has been programmed so there is not a chance of having a reveresed TH channel or something. Anyways live and learn. At least the Scorpion ESCs are not terribly expensive. Just take your time and READ as much as you can. When I started I spent 2 to 3 hours a night online reading as much as possible. Actually come to think of it I still do that. Anyways, good luck.

Man I at a loss here, why tell him to go buy a NiCd battery to setup his TRex450? That means he will have to have another odd battery to maintain. Hell if he has a LiPo only charger then he can't even charge it! Or at least he will have to buy/make an adapter to charge it. A $12 bec will use his normal flight packs and take up 1/10th the space of a 4.8V battery! Plus it will very likely cost him less.

Edit: So I went and looked at RX packs at Tower Hobbies and the cheapest pack they sell is $12 but that is going to be less than if he goes to a lhs.

I'd guess his radio came with a wall wart to charge nicads.

For a simple go buy a battery thread, this is turning into a really weird batch of replies. Seems a simple answer isn't good enough anymore.

Time to pull the plug on this thread.

Oh yeah I forgot that most radio chargers will also charge RX packs. I use a lipo for my radio so I don't use my wall wart any more.
