i was just installing my servos and testing them. i had everything hooked up except i left two connectors from the engine un-hooked and left one on(so i could put my servos at "90". do you think connecting only one connector from the esc to the engine made the smoke come out(i assume my esc is bad now cause of the smoke)

You should have disconnected the ESC from the receiver and used a receiver battery to get your servos at 90˚. Obviously if your ESC smoked you will need to buy another one.

Take Care,

no blades, someone told me to just connect at least two connectors from the eng so it wont spool up when i set the servos to 90 . im kinda mad at whoever that was cause it looks like that is what killed my esc.
should i order the sam one and just keep the eng connected fully and just flip the switch on the ir reciever(cause when i fliped the swich i could still move the servos while the eng isnt running and i could also program the esc with the remote thing.

should have either disconnected the motor, or just use a receiver battery in the rx instead of the esc. I sometimes pull the motor away from the gear, especially when I'm setting up my esc.

Man, I miss the eighties.

Pulling two motor leads isn't what smoked your ESC, something else did.

Who raised the ground since I took off?

because my esc shot smoke and died. I'm scared it might do it again.
i fliped the switch on the ir reciever that came with my scorpion and it shut off the the eng and allowed me to still move the servos.
i don't know why i did it, but someone told me to remove at least 2 connectors from the eng to make sure it did'nt spool up. I think doing this fried my esc. I should have just used that ir reciever switch and not dick with the eng connecters. so that is why i am afrade to go through the esc, but if someone can tell me for sure that is what killed my esc i wouldnt have a problem using the esc.

if I get one of those BEC's, tell me how they work. it looks like one end obviously hooks to the rx, but not sure on the other end.
dose it hook directly to my lipo batt after i solder my connectors on it?

If you use a external BEC instead of the built-in BEC if your ESC has a built-in BEC, you can either solder the other end to you motor pack(s) or use another pack for you RX. If you use an external BEC with a external pack and your ESC has a BEC, you need to remove the RED wire from the ESC plug.
I don't think just having one motor wire connected caused your ESC to let the smoke out. What model is the ESC, was it good for the cell count pack you connected it to?

A couple of years ago I burned up an ESC by using the flight battery and ESC to setup my T-Rex (one motor lead disconnect). Since then I disconnect the ESC and use a flight pack.

Note:
Castle Creations was good enough to replace the ESC for me.

If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter.

motor packs as in my lipos i use? i have to solder it stright to the lipo?
to use an external bec and not using an esc at all is what i am trying to understand. i am very new

can i get an exteranal bec and solder connectors on it to hook up to my lipos i use for flight.

is this how a bec is set up?
RX<------------>BEC<------------>LIPO
is it this simple?

hi
the basic idea is that the power leads of BEC and the ESC should be joined and soldered to the male power plug

the female power plug is soldered to the battery leads

here is a crude picture to help

when you use a seperate BEC like this be sure to disconnect the ESC's BEC by pulling the red wire out of the ESC's servo plug , use a pin to lift the plugs tab , and the red wire will slide out , then cover the exposed metal connector with heat shrink

hope this helps

If two of the motor leads are connected, it is still possible for the motor to pulse (which some ESC's do not like at all!) Also when you power up the electronics, some ESCs BEC will get hot but when they are used in flight, the will be ok. By chance what was your setup? (Heli/Motor/ESC/Servos/Gyro.....etc)

Disconnect all three wires going to the motor and setup your servos or go buy a cheap 4 cell NiCad RX pack and plug it in the RX.

When you disconnected two motor leads and left one connected, the only way the ESC could have burned up is if the other two wires shorted together. russ only disconnecting one wire is what will let the smoke out ever time.
