What a project! The rarest of the rare....the mythical GMP Viper!

Website write-up here:

http://www.1017.org/cricket/viper.html

I didnt bother with a video, because we mustly just hovered it around, afraid to hurt it!

I tried to contact the fellow who im told is the owner of the other Viper, but had no success, so again, if anyone out there has any information on the Viper we dont have already, or any corrections to our reserach, please drop me a line.

Enjoy!

Marc

That is awsome. I remember looking at the Viper @ Toledo show, I think in 1990, maybe 91. It was right after GMP split from Hirobo because they were pushing the Made in USA products. To bad the Viper never made it to the market, it would have been the best 30 size available.

Thanks fellas for the compliments…it was a really fun and interesting restoration project to say the least…and to be one of the handful of people ever to fly one is pretty neat too!

So now for the record, let it be known that the Viper is not a myth! It actually exists!!

Wow! Those are the best, most detailed contemporary pics of the Viper ive seen!

There's a front plate on the frame (see where the drive belt off the clutch goes back through) that mine does not have.

It would be great to get a copy of that Viper flyer that was sitting on the table next to it!

Very cool pictures! Ive PM'ed you to ask about putting them on the website.

Thanks for sharing!!

JC: I used SAB 425 carbons off my trex 500. IIRC, I had to file off 1/2mm off the top and 1/2mm off the bottom of the roots to make them fit the Viper's tiny blade grips. Apparently, GMP never really decided on an official blade specification for the Viper, and had been experimenting with different sizes still when the end came. The 425's look about right when comparing to the vintage photos of the Viper.

Marc,

I have a Mini-Elite rotor head that was made for the Concept 30 by Tech Specialties. Do you know if that head is based on the same design as that on your Viper?

Hey Daniel:

It flies good, but for .30 sized machines, im spoiled on my Scorpion powered T-Rex 500 with V-Bar 4.0, so going from that to the Viper makes the Viper feel like a pig in comparison im sorry to say. However, when you consider what else was around in 1990, the Viper would have unquestionably been the top of the line .30 machine, had it been produced. Let's not forget this was a full 8 years before the Raptor 30 was introduced. The only thing that could touch it in it’s day were the top .60 size machines. It’s still a lot of fun to fly, and let me tell you how much attention it got from the old time heli flyers last time I brought it to the field! Only problem is I haven’t flown it since the restoration and web story….im too chicken to fly it anymore!
