wow. they are ramming 'em thru pretty quickly...

A sweeping government policy for all new births in the United States has just passed the House of Representatives and is now headed to the Senate. The Mother’s Act, if passed, will mandate that all new mothers be screened by means of a list of subjective questions that will determine if each mother is mentally fit to take their newborn home from the hospital. Just imagine that after your child is born, you are told that you can’t take them home since a multiple choice questionnaire wasn’t answered correctly. Just imagine being told that the only way you can take your child home is if you or your spouse goes into treatment or on anti-depressants which we know causes psychosis, delusions, and even homicidal thoughts. It just doesn’t make sense. Unfortunately, this bill is on a fast track–No public debate, no public disclosure of the broad impact on our society and that is why we need you to act now!

The Mother’s Act violates our Constitutional right to privacy and your right to liberty and it is just outright dangerous. That is why we need you to help stop this. We urgently need you to call and email each Senator on the HELP Committee and tell them you STRONGLY OPPOSE the MOTHER’S ACT and that you are OUTRAGED that there was NO public debate or disclosure on the impact this would have on our society as a whole.

"Mother's Act"

who's mother would that be?

if they are going to withhold all babies from women who might have a slight mental imbalance then no one is taking any babies home.

they may raise them on government baby farms.

Now hold on a minute
Maybe these are the questions:

1. Do you own a gun?
2. Have you ever seen a bible?
3. Are you opposed to gay marriage?
4. Do you object to paying someone else's mortgage?
5. Does your car get less than 53 mpg?
6. Are you opposed to free dope?
7. Do you believe there should be a border between the US and Mexico?

See, perfectly good questions. It's obvious that any "yes" answer would mean that a woman would not be a fit liberal mother.

This has been 7 years in the making, how is that fast track? You're making it sound like they wrote it yesterday. Give me a break. How about this. Next time you all (you know who you are) post something, research it and give the whole story and not just the part that suites your political agenda or beliefs.

Care to debate the actual bill as opposed to going off on just the timing?

It passed. Does it bother you? Do you approve of it?

And how does that make the bill good. No matter how you slice it takes away more of your freedoms, is that a good thing. If so then you are just as guilty of picking and choosing what fits your agenda.

Ad Hominem. Do you support this bill, or think on any level that this is a good thing?

I don't understand. Have been watching the news all morning and see nothing about this.

Not saying is didn't happen. Just wondering why it isn't being reported. Maybe I missed it. I watch both CNN & Fox.

Monkey, if you or some else could point out the portion of the bill that implies that a questionare is going to be used to determine if a mother can take her child home from the hospital I'd appreciate it, because I can't find it.

This is the closest I can find.
Expresses the sense of Congress that the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health may conduct a nationally representative longitudinal study of the relative mental health consequences for women of resolving a pregnancy in various ways.
Amends the Public Health Service Act to authorize the Secretary to make grants for projects for the establishment, operation, and coordination of effective and cost-efficient systems for the delivery of essential services to individuals with a postpartum condition and their families. Directs the Secretary to ensure that such projects provide education and services with respect to the diagnosis and management of postpartum conditions. Authorizes such projects to include: (1) delivering or enhancing outpatient home-based health and support services; and (2) providing education to new mothers and their families about postpartum conditions to promote earlier diagnosis and treatment. Sets forth grant requirements.
I am guessing the previous drafts were worse judged by hte comments I ahve seen on a few boards. Honestly though, even though I don't seeteh reasons people are so alarmed, I dont think it's the .gov's place to interfer, or inject itself into the area of child birth, or rearing.

This bill is going to erode the liberal voter base faster than anything a conservative can think of.

Imagine all those inner city baby pumps and all the babies they won't be taking home with them. The liberals will lose a lot of votes if this is passed.

Darn it, just got home and John beat me to the punch.
Ad Hominem. Do you support this bill, or think on any level that this is a good thing?
Yes I do. The way I've interpreted it, it's a spending bill to increase research, education, and possible treatment for PPD. Nothing about locking the mother away in a psych ward, taking away her child, or ramming pills down her throat.
I dont think it's the .gov's place to interfer, or inject itself into the area of child birth, or rearing.
I agree. But funding has to come from somewhere and unfortunately/fortunately (depends on how you look at it) it may come from the the taxpayer.

No it doesn't, if they keep their noses out of citizens private lives. Just more big government trying to control more and more of our lives, the true rounding out of the cradle to the grave liberal mindset.

This is NOT a .gov issue, it is a medical community issue.

I guess that's where we differ, I see it as another service that is provided and not as a form of control.

At what cost? In other words, we all know that government programs are costly and inefficient. Why add fuel to the fire? It just makes no sense.

The government needs to build and repair our infrastructure and protect us from our enemies. Foreign & domestic. The rest, leave it up to us. We are the best at leading our lives. The government is the worst.

Thats my taxable 2 cents.

I cannot see it as a service as long as it is mandatory. It sort of defies the whole meaning of a "service."
