There are lots of guys out there that feel fine with spending $100s to make their heli pretty. I am not guy. For me flying is where it's at. I could care less what the heli looks like as long as it flies well and is easy to see. That is why I run the cheapest, easiest to paint canopies I can find.

Make 'em bright!
If you are just starting out than "pretty" should be secondary to easy to see. Paint everything the brightest color you can get your hands on. That includes the canopy, fins and even other things like landing gear and booms. Florescent orange is my favorite and Walmart sells it. That orange glows against the sky! Here is what my first helis looked like

Crashing
I have to say I am tired of trashing canopies in crashes. Not only does it cost me about $10 for even the cheapest ones but then I have to trim, paint, glue and apply stickers to the damn thing. That wastes time as well as money.

Well yesterday I crashed my Trex450 and it shattered my 2 week old canopy. After putting the bird all back together and not having another canopy, I decided it was time to save $10. So I got the shattered canopy out of the trash and grabbed the packing tape.

It may look a little rough but from 15ft away it will look as good as new. Plus I think I am going to paint it tonight. Probably going to go back to orange and maybe add some florescent green.

My point
My point is simple ... when you are starting out the look of your heli should not be a priority in any way. It should be basic and functional so that when you crash, you don't trash a $75 canopy. And don't be afraid of a little tape on your canopy. It actually makes it stronger!

When I started out I had the same thought as you, lots of the guys at my club, very good pilots also think the same. Me, I love to fly but I like when my helis also look good. Why, maybe because I am not a very good pilot so this is how I get the attention.

I am a complete beginner. I guess my stuff will look like that before long. I don't see anything wrong with it.

I like a nice looking heli, for me, nothing beats a good paint job!! For a person just starting out, dont fly the custom canopys so that you can keep the cost down if you crash.

I have taped up canopy that came taped up when I got my heli. it cracked some more and I taped and glued to patch it. I bought a few new ones too. When ever I put new one on something goes wrong and new canopy get damage beyond repair.

I have seen a lot of guys tape up canopies and never understood it. I look at it this way. You have a pile of money invested in a nice helicopter. You can find a nice custom painted canopy for under $100. Why not have it look nice?

It's a complex, costly, glow powered anti-gravity machine!

Cause $100 could instead buy you

= 9 Align 450 white plastic canopies + can o' paint
= 7 sets of 325 Pro woodies
= 4 HS65HBs
= Scorpion -8 motor + Align 35X esc
= 2 HK450 kits with shipping
= 4 Flightmax 2200 25C lipos with shipping
= Used GY401 and still enough left over to take your heli to McDonalds and have nice dinner for 2.

I have a few nice canopies for my 450 when I want to "dress it up"

... but the beat-up stock canopy gets most of the flight time
