That Hughes XH-17 Sky Crane looks like a serious boom strike waiting to happen. Also the tail rotor seems too small for that beast.

The main rotor was powered by bleed air being forced through the blades, exiting at the tip. This requires very little torque compensation according to the article below.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hughes_XH-17

I would also think that when the main rotor got up to speed, the blades would straighten out considerably...

^^^^^Great reading. Thanks!

I found this part interesting:
The propulsion system was unusual. Two General Electric J35 turbojet engines were used, sending bleed air up through the rotor hub. The blades were hollow, and the hot compressed air traveled through the blades to tip jets where fuel was injected. In flight the rotors spun at a sedate 88 rpm. Since the rotor was driven at the tips rather than the hub

Cool stuff. Still laughing about the 25 foot tail rotor diameter. That is just huge.

A Mi-26 scale heli would be something to behold.

I got to look at an Mi-26 up close and personal in a far away land. That thing was hard to grasp even standing right next to it. The sheer size of the components is just unbelievable. The blades are something to behold... they are so big they resemble noodles they droop so much. Good thing Newton was borne so we can use his centripital acceleration to straighten those things out! It was a treat to see it up close and a treat to watch it head out for a haul.

You could build a 1/4 scale one and carry 4 people (maybe more)

That is NOT F-15, why would a Russian heli lift a "F"

Just kidding trying to pull Yankee leg...

Here is mig-25 which is faster then SR-71. It was designed to intercept US SR-71s. Take a look at the size of engines and consider that entire aircraft was welded out of nickel alloy and titanium. Check out the size of the engines. Russians never published the actual performance numbers, but it was known in pentagon that this thing could run circles around SR-71. That was the reason SR-72 program got canceled. If you do not believe me about MIG-25 then look up MIG-31...

Here is the immage:

FYI:

During my childhood, my father's friend was a "25" pilot, he told me that when he did a non-training intercept his canopy got so hot that after landing they had to unjam it, because metal rails buckled...

I can't publish the picture. It was intuitive before, but ...

Please watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izIClWYKK1o

I've been to the "edge" when sky becomes dark and you start to see the stars during the day. It's actually amusing, you have sun shining from left, but the sky is deep dark and you see stars. And then your aircraft dives.... for a long time... and you see how curvature of the earth appears again. It's most majestic experience you could experience in your life...
