T-REX 450 › 450 Pro V3 Torque Tube Broke

I was flying my 450 pro today, second flight on it ever and I touched the tail on the ground and the torque tube sheared. I thought someone else showed a similar picture. All the tail gears are fine I just found it odd for the tt to shear like it did. If it had been my 600 or 700 the tail gears would have stripped. Guess I will need to stock up on torque tubes rather than gears. For now I will try to epoxy it back together with a carbon sleeve over it until I can get a new torque tube.

dam torque tube
this is the only problem with torque tubes....not like a belt where it would skip if you had a tail strike.......looks like they made the tube to thin......but it is still in ins infantry to be fair...regards helinelly

if it broken.....glue the bast#$d...keep flying..i tell the wife my crashes cost £20! works for me

this is not a TT issue as the aboive posted said this is a materials or quality issue with this part.

I've crashed many TTs and also hit many on the ground during autos and bad landings.
I've never had one fail at the TT itself.

the Cheap easy to replace crown gears are supposed to be the sacrificial part not the TT itself.
this is a defect.

this is a defect.
Uh, no.
He hit the tail on the ground.

Different helicopters, different parts go.
I have yet to see this TT go in flight on anybody..
I have not hit the ground with my tail and my TT still works.
Must be defective!

Um casey..
do some reading on other threads.
ALIGN has already stated there is an issue.
they think 10 kits got in the wild with a weaker than production TT.
read mungers posts on HF.

Mongers' TT arrived broken, and the other guy touched the tail too.
I don't see align officially stating a torque tube defect. Perhaps you can point that out for me?

Cause if so, I will ground my bird. If not, I will keep flying and watching out for the tail blades

Here is my solution for now. I started looking through my carbon and found a rod that has a 5mm od and a 3mm od. I cut it down to ~347mm. I removed the ends from the original tt and ground them down with a Dremel to 3mm, because the end that is actually glued to the original rod is a little larger. I JB welded them into the carbon rod. For the bearing I am using a 5x10x4mm and to make it fit against the tail boom and added a piece of heat shrink tubing that makes it slide in just right. Here is a picture and I hope to try it out tomorrow and see how it holds up.

I've spoken to Align and they have acknowledged that there was a problem. There is a score on the inside of the TT for the bonding agent to grab on to. On the start of a run the pressure was set too high. They think that ten of them got through QC. So we know where three of them are, who has the other seven?

I put a sleeve on mine and it flew great. Really great; but as I went into some tic-tocs, the other end snapped and set the whole unit down on its tail. Now I'm waiting for gears.

This is part of the 'early adaptor syndrome'. It is an illness that afflicts a lot of us. It is the same in every industry and just one of those facts of life. If you want the reap the rewards of the latest and greatest, you've got to be prepared for this kind of thing.

Personally, I think the 450Pro is revolutionary and my time spent flying it was the best flight time I've had in this hobby. For me it is worth the hassle. Torque Tubes are more problematic than belts, no doubt about it, but from what I've seen, they fly a lot better. I could be wrong on this, but that is what it looks like to me as an advanced newbie. Both my 450Pro and my 500esp are grounded waiting for tt gears.

It is a perfect day in Southern California, and I don't have anything to fly. Now that's sad.

I'm still not clear on weather or not you crashed due to the TT failing in flight or not?

No I was asking whyfly.
Sorry to hear about your TT Cameron. Did you get that carbon replacement working? I have to admit, you guys have me thinking twice about flying mine at the moment. That's why I'm wondering if whyfly crashed or if his TT went out. That would be the first case I have heard of one going out in flight that wasn't already damaged or modified.

whyfly,
did you crash because the torque tube broke in mid air while you were flying? Or did you crash and that is why the torque tube is broken?
