Here's my Spectra-G canopy. This is only the 3rd time I have unwrapped it from its protective cover and taken it out of the box. You can't really tell from the picture, but it already has some cracks across the rear "ears" and there are places where the gelcoat is flaking off--this damage comes from simply touching it.

For such a big canopy, it has been made with only a single layer of thin fiberglass cloth. It is very flexible and almost collapses under its own weight. Fortunately, it smells like the resin is finally starting to cure which is a good thing because when I first got the canopy in October, the large dollops of resin near the mounting holes were still soft and it smelled very stong of resin.

Short of buying another higher-quality aftermarket canopy, I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what my options are to salvage this canopy? Without modification, I think that painting this canopy is a waste of time unless I choose to use a very flexible latex paint because the gel-coat is already flaking off--so obviously paint is not going to stick.

I'm thinking of trying to re-fiberglass the inside of the canopy with some heavier weight cloth to see if I can reinforce it a little bit. I'm not sure what kind of resin they used--looks like polyester resin. I'm not certain if epoxy resin will stick to it?

Is everyone else's Spectra-G canopy the same way? Has anyone else had any experience with modifying their Spectra-G canopy? What kind of cloth did you use? What kind of resin did you use? Is there any way to keep the gelcoat from flaking off? Is there an aftermarket supplier who sells a higher quality canopy which will fit the Spectra-G?

you might want to contact MA. If you send an email with some history they may be able to help you

So then is this not typical for a Miniature Aircraft canopy?

Mine was the same way. You need to reinforce it from the inside if you want it to stay nice after paint. I called MA and they said if its cracked it was shipped that way? I ordered another and it was not cracked but after a little work to get ready for paint I had created cracks in the gel-coat so I had to reinforce it. My solution was to order a new one from Arizona heli better quality and at under $170 painted its just a better way to go

I waited most of last summer for Miniature Aircraft to get another Spectra-G in stock, and the wait was apparently because they did not have any canopies available. Finally they shipped out some kits in October and I got one of them.

Looking at the MA website now, they say, "We've started getting high-quality gel-coated canopies for our models. The Stratus, IonX, Spectra, Tempest, and Fury are available now. Soon we'll have more for our legendary models the Graphite SE and XCell gas."

Can I conclude that the canopies they shipped out in October are not the same "High Quality" canopies they are selling now?

Talegunner, when did you receive your canopy, and what did you use to reinforce it? Did you not use the little rubber gommets on your canopy holes?

My canopy was also the same. It looks like the standard canopy is crap. I also suggest to order a canopy from a different supplier.

I just got mine last month. But I was told they were waiting for there new canopies and my box did say cracked canopy. They have had some issues in this area. Please be aware I was told I could have the kit without and wait for the new ones. The replacment I received was and older canopy. I have been told the new ones are nice but have yet to see one. even on my Ion X2 canopy I had to take some 3/4 oz cloth and some CF strips and reinforce it before paint. adds some weight but they hold up better.

until I see one of MAs new canopies I will order all mine from Arizona heli you can also get unpainted one from AZ Heli as well.

Yes I use the rubber gromets

I am currently reinforcing and getting ready to paint 2 Ion X2 and 1 Spectra G canopy. I will try and get some pics this week.

Here are the Ions paint ready. I have been experimenting with Auto Air paint so I'm learning all over. this stuff goes on very dry and looks flat until cleared.

Does Arizona heli cut out for exh and carb, or does the end user have to do that?

I'm wondering because I've configured mine as forward mounted canopy and rear facing engine, not the typical setup.

I'm going to give painting my own canopy a shot, but if I goof it up, I may order one from AH.

I told AZ what eng config & what muffler and the jewel generator. They knew exactly what and were to cut before the paint went on.

send them an email tell him what your config is and I would bet he has already done it and has the T Shirt err templates

Oh ya he will give you finished/ship date and you can bet it will be there.

Yup, it took three tries before I finally received a "usable" canopy from Minair. I have posted on this before, and basically, you need to reinforce all the way around the edges of the canopy with really thick fiberglass tape and good resin or epoxy. I used West System epoxy to lay-up the reinforced areas and it worked very well.

The other real problem is the fact that these canopies twist or become misshapen during shipping because they are apparently not cured completely before being put in a box. That's when you've got to get creative and aggressive with a heat gun to reshape the canopy and make it fit properly. It's not perfect, but it is certainly salvageable. Minair really needs to get their canopy vendor under control.

The man in the brown UPS van just dropped off a package from Minature Aircraft on my front porch. Inside is my replacement Spectra-G canopy. I just opened up the box, and to my surprise it didn't smell at all like uncured polyester resin. The canopy was swimming in styrofoam peanuts, but when I took it out, it looked really nice. The fiberglass is thick (but not too thick) and quite stiff. The resin was completely dry. Only problem is the large seam down the center which will have to be removed with a Dremel, and the gelcoat is not as glossy as the old canopy (even looks like it was sanded a little bit), but compared to the old canopy this new one is perfect. I hope this is the kind of canopies Miniature Aircraft will be selling from now on.

Thanks Cyndi and MA for fixing this.

Check the canopy carefully to see if it's twisted or bulged anywhere. This is what took a lot of heat and time fiddling around trying to get it straightened out.

If it truly is straight as you say, congrats, your life will be a WHOLE lot easier. . .

This new canopy is really, really nice. A huge improvement over the one that came with the kit. MA has obviously found someone else to manufacture these canopies for them.

That sounds perfect and exactly how they should be
Mine always had a little seam down the centerline but you always sand that off and paint it anyways so it will look perfect when you get done

I'm glad they finally solved this as it was the only missing link to an awesome 3D gasser!
