They have a couple of the 520's there. They have been there for about two wks. I think I want to go with the Spartan anyways. I ask for the opinions because at the time I wouldn't know the difference between the two. That's why I ask witch one will I be happy with no matter my fly'n style.

Another Positive Vote for the Spartan.

The 520 very well could be a better Gyro, but the Spartan is available now and is proven not to mention the updates!!!

Thousand of pilots already bought the GY520 but only few reported how good is the gyro after testing it... It seems that not everybody is satisfied with it!
I heard, in Japan, many people complaing about the piro consistency, the most important characteristic for 3d flying in my opinion...
After reading and comparing gyros, finally I ordered a Spartan from Revolution Models!

I've also heard that about the 520 piro rate. I think I'm sold on the Spartan!

reply:
Buy ONLY Spartan b/c that is what I fly, and hence is the ONLY logical choice lol.

Just kidding, but you will get this in spades on forum posts such as this.

Either gyro will probably work fine. It will come down to which features you want, support, and pricing. I think the Spartan is a bit more money. I fly mainly Spartan's myself, but they are not perfect. For me they are close to everything I need/want and the ability to upgrade firmware, the support, and size(no amp) made me jump on these over the 611 and Solid G, which were the alternatives at the time of my decision. I loved my G7703d JR's actually, but wanted the ability to adjust the stop brake/gain more, otherwise that was the perfect gyro for me back then.

Anyway, getting back to topic. I doubt you'll outfly either. From what I read the 520 is great, is super small, and probably flies about as well as a Spartan for most people. I think FOR ME, what wins the battle is Spartan's support and updates for new servos, pulse rates etc... I would be leary of Futaba's support for "other brand" servos. Just my 2cents.

IF I had to choose all over again today, it would be either Spartan or Mini-G. I think Futaba would be still a distant 3rd to either of those. I don't run anything smaller than a TREX500 though, so I do feel the 520 has the edge in 250/450 size heli's, due to size/weight.

Also remember the USB cable for the 520 will not allow updates. It's simply to allow programming via a PC. Pretty funny when everyone says how easy it is to setup with the TX sticks. I have flown a Spartan in the past and it seemed more prone to vibration than the Solid G I replaced it with. I picked up another used one to try with the new software. Don't dismiss the Solid-G or Mini-G. They are just as good as the Spartan in piro consistency and very easy to program with the TX or a G-view. They are not upgradable but then they haven't had to be.

Maybe you can do more detail settings with the interface, and maybe access to more features? Just a thought.

I just love the rumour mill.

When we first received the test samples with the 520's, there were indeed some suggestions made by some of the test group on how to improve the pirouettes, including the stops. Others like myself didn't have the issues due to differences in models and ability to tweak the gyro's performance with the software in the transmitter. Futaba immediately answered the concerns of the test pool and updated the gyro's firmware and software. The final version that has shipped to the public incorporated these changes and is a fine unit as many are now seeing. So please, if you hear negative things about the performance of the gyro, make sure you check your source. Hearsay info isn't worth the time it takes to spread it.

The GY520 is a nice gyro and will be fine for many pilots. But it does not come close to the Spartan with the V2 upgrade. In fact it does not even match the performance of the V1. There is nothing wrong with this. It is mid-range gyro and Futaba has given it a model number indicating that. Soon the hype will fade and then we can all them look forward to a GY620.
