Well, i have aquired a free 1984 BMW 325 E. According to the previous owner the car runs fine, but will not go into second gear. Any starting point to troubleshoot? hoping it is not the entire tranny? maybe a linkage? where?

either way a tranny problem is costly and almost always has to go to a pro. but a free car is worth putting some money into. id take it to the tranny shop. they will let you know how bad it is going to cost. maybe find a tranny out of a junk yard instead? most likely a synco

yeah, i think i will drop the tranny myself(I have a decent amount of mechanical experiance) then i will take it in to be looked at and repaired/replaced.

A tranny on ebay is only about $300.

Pick up a bently manual it gives step by step instructions on repairs. You can pick one up at Bavarian Autosport. Craig B

Check the simple stuff first. Sometimes a mis-adjusted clutch can cause this problem. I don't have first hand experience with your tranny, but it is a safe bet there is no linkage. I would bet the shifter directly controls the synchros. Don't be scared by the BMW badge, a tranny is a tranny. I would guess the synchro for 2nd gear is damaged but sometimes the shifter mechanism itself is buggered. It is easy enough to fix but it does require a teardown of the tranny. The only obstacle might be specialized tools. If you do want to take it to a shop, you can save a bunch of money by dropping the tranny and taking it in, and reinstalling it yourself. It's a free car, so even if you spend $500 to get the tranny fixed, you're money ahead.

yeah, its a pretty nice car, so i dont mind putting some money into it. We are going to take a closer look at what is actually happening this week. Maybe its something simple. If it is a syncro i would drop it myself and then take the tranny in and get it repaired, i dont want to mess it up more trying to do it myself. We have a pit in our garage so it shouldnt be too hard to remove it.
