...almost.

I am almost to the point of getting my first car. I am 20 if you are wondering. I was wondering if its just me, or is the insurance going to cost me around 800 for every 6 months for a first time driver or are the online quotes grossly off?

Do you have any moving violations? My son is 20 and paying a little over $300/month for insurance. But he bought a 2004 mustang with a V8 in it, not to mention some prior moving violations. I'd figure on more like $1200.00 every six months. Depends on where you live too. Depends on if you buy new or used. Depends on whether you finance it. Find an insurance agent and get a quote, they'll give you an better explanation for your need.

Good luck!

Damn that ground is hard! When's the right time to get out of this money sucking hobby?

I have no tickets, or moving violations. The car will be paid off in full. I am looking for a small four banger, nothing big.

Smart move having the money to pay for it. The older the car the cheaper the insurance will be for you. I hate to say it but get collision on the car you buy it will save you a bunch of grief and hassle if you get into an accident. Been there done that.

Any chance of getting a parent to add you to their policy and have you pay the extra? You'll probably need to add a parent to the registration to be able to do that.

My son is 20, drives a Ford Ranger and has a couple of tickets and 1 at-fault accident. He adds about $550 to our policy (the truck is insured for collision).

My daughter is 17, drives a V6 Taurus and she adds just over $300 to the policy (her car is a beater and not covered for collision).

My guess would be insurance in their own names instead of on my policy would about double the cost. (All the numbers I gave were for 6 months).

By the way, you made some smart choices for a first car.
