it looks like I am going to be getting a New Spectra G Gasser kit with the z23 motor?

Can anyone give me some pointers on what to expect ...or is there anything I need to know before building this?

I am also wondering if there is anything SPECIFIC to gassers that I am going to need to buy to get this going..

I have had a couple hundred electric and nitros but never had a gasser before

Any help or tips are greatly appreciated..

Anthony

Well the only thing i can say is it takes alot more time to get a gasser flying so be very patient. Good luck and take your time. Read everything you can.

Thanks

You want to consider the following:

1. On board generator (Jewel works really well).
2. Larger capacity RX battery, 4,000 ma works well.
3. Oil to break in the motor (carbon based Lawnboy asheless.
4. Synthetic oil for after break in (Saber 100 Amsoil or ...)
5. Heat gun for checking temp of the motor.
6. Check here on RR for recommendations on BLades, Gyro etc
7. Find and watch the videos by John Garst (sp) on Spectra Build.
8. Find and read the thread by Malorie on throttle arm and curve settings.
9. Consider (if it is not already) having the engine modified.

Have fun

Welcome to the wonderful world of gassers.

Forget all you know about throttle curves as it pertains to all your previous heli's

like smallplanes wrote, you must be patient, as you won't get the full potential out of your motor until it's properly broken in and the throttle curves are dialed in.

I know you're into power from previous posts I've seen from you in the electrics forums. You might want to re-think your choice of engine. My personal preference, but I've had both modified 231 and 260 and like the added power of the 260. Or, you might want to wait for the 270 which others, including myself are waitng for release.

Good luck, the Spectra-G is a solid machine.

Motors....
Should I just buy the Monster 4.8HP one from Hanson to begin with?

I see the best one he has is only $500 and makes like 5hp

Does anyone have experience with this motor or know anyone who does?

I'm thinking this may be the way I need togo from the start...lol..

Here's a link to the motors...I'm looking at the 3DMAX motor

There's a ton of info in here on the subject of throttle curves and governors. GV-1 is popular, which I use and I've used the CSM revloc 20 with good results.

Best thing is search and ask a lot of questions. I am by no means a gasser guru, but I've learned from the ones who post here and help others. I'm the only one on this island with gassers and have had great success so far, just by reading and asking questions.

This should get you started.

That is the motor have. As compared to the 231 I had in my old Predator, there was a noticeable difference. I believe the HP listed is with a tuned pipe, which is not recommended for Heli's. Some have used them and I'm sure will comment.

Toxic Al is another modifier, but I have no experience with his product, so can't comment.

It's been a few years since I built my X-Cell gasser, but I remember it took quite a while. I did go slow, and made sure everything was balanced.

Take your time, and you will have a great heli. I think you will be pleased.

My gasser would be the last one I would give up.

.
That's the one I just got for my spectra G it now has almost 2 gal through it and its just starting to run smooth and make some power. I cant wait to finish break-in. These guys around here are very helpful!

although I'm just getting started I can offer my newly found experience with the 3D Max.
Starting with get the V4 muffler or a Zimmerman a good air-filter and the metal insulator block right off the bat. also get an HGK spark plug #3066 cmr7h and as I was told be very patient grasshopper

You are very lucky. . . you live only a short distance from this forum's Spectra-G gasser guru, Raja Bortcosh, and I'm sure he will probably chime in here soon. He is also the supplier of the Jewel generator that is MANDATORY (in my opinion) on a big gasser.

Do some searches, ask lot's of questions, and welcome aboard. Your RC experience is about to change. . .

Build it with Love !
Gassers will stay with you until your an old man !

Build with lots of care and love and smooze it, spoon with it and talk to it alot ! Most likley aftr you get thru the phaze part you won't be going back to repair or re- DO .

Keep it away from the li- rotor's because they taunt it, tease and annoy it -- if gasser feel's like at any time thel' l just roll over and crush the lil one's. Theve also been known to Huff & Puff and blow them down just for fun. Kinda an evil prank they play

Many of the littler job's will come and go by the bucket or actually sack full. Make sure you also don't list it " or them " in your will just so you can {Hoover} above and laugh at the discussions on who's gona get it.

I pulled the lid on one of mine the other day and found a battiery I didn't remember I owned and all the foam was rotten H'mm say's something about MA - Can't remember when I swung a wrench ??

PS. If you decide to run the camper gas stuff your alway's gona have this obsesion for Hot Dogs.

I've got this thing now that when I eat at the Hot Dog emporioum here I do this weird thing with my thumb's

Build with patient's and Love - She gona be like your best slipper's !

Predator is better
Jag72, I highly suggest you buy the carbon Century Predator instead of the Spectra-G. I have compared videos of gasser doing 3D flips and the Spectra-G can't perform flips easily without rotating on its axis. The Predator can do it flawlessly and consecutively without rotating on its axis. The Predator is the better 3D-able machine than the Spectra-G.
