Ok I'll admit I got the heli bug. But the weather's been crappy and I've not been able to fly much the past couple weeks, so I got to thinking: what is it about r/c heli's, anyway?

Here's some things I think are cool about this hobby that I came up with (in no order):

1) I like controlling a powerful machine using intricate controls

2) I enjoy a stiff challenge

3) I enjoy learning new skills

4) I enjoy the fact there's more I can't do yet, than things I can

5) I like to build, tinker, & modify stuff

6) I like to study (and come to appreciate) how things are engineered

7) I enjoy trying ot figure out how things work, and how they work
together

8) I enjoy being outside w/ buddies (yes, even the plankers!!)

9) Accordingly, I enjoy flying while folks watch (sometimes, that is)
as opposed to solitary flying

10) I can't get enough of autorotations

11) I enjoy the forums; as they're great sources of info & support

12) I enjoy buying & selling heli's & components and maybe making
friends in the process

13) I enjoy being able to do something fairly well that, at least
around here, not many folks do (nor care to?)

14) I think it's cool when I'm flying at the nearby school field, and
cars slow down or strangers come up to see what's happening

15) I think it's cool that I still get nervous before I hit the
starter (if not, probably be bored?)

16) I enjoy the sense of accomplishment I get when learning something
new

edit 17) I like trying to help noobs; recalling that that's where I started

-And coolest of all, being a hacker, I watch these pro pilots and can truly appreciate the skill it takes to do the stuff they do

Just some thoughts on a rainy day. Add your own if you wish

helis don't NAG! ;

they go down EASY! ;

and they don't get jealous if you get, look, work on or fly another heli

and when you decide to go for another heli you don't have to worry for alimony, c-support and they are not entitled to 1/2 of your assets!

I dont suffer from mental iIlness, I actually enjoy mine!

Why? Cuz there's no other sound on Earth like the sound of helicopter blades thwõp-smacking air molecules into obedient submission, and RC heli blades sound better (to me) than full-sized blades any day of the week. After 4 years this sound still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up and salute.

Helicopters very clever and good fun, why are they featured less at model airshows?
As much as I like them I,ve not been taken by them as a spectator.
I do appreciate the skill required to fly 3D, I just get bored stiff watching it.

Helis are Better Than Women

1. A helicopter will kill you quickly . . . a woman takes
her time.

2. Helicopters can be turned on by a flick of a switch.

3. A helicopter does not get mad if you ‘touch and go.’

4. A helicopter does not object to a preflight inspection.

5. Helicopters come with manuals.

6. Helicopters have strict weight and balance limits.

7. You can fly a helicopter any time of the month.

8. Helicopters don’t come with in-laws.

9. Helicopters don’t whine unless something is really
wrong.

10. Helicopters don’t care about how many other helicopters
you have flown.

11. When flying, you and your helicopter both arrive at the
same time.

12. Helicopters don’t mind if you look at other helicopters,
or if you buy helicopter magazines.

13. It’s OK to use tie-downs on your helicopter.

JRjoe.....

+1 for Gimbal's reply. There is no other sound on Earth like helicopter blades beating the air into submission. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

The challenge of it all. Nothing else is this hard for this long ... in terms of difficulty that is

Plus nothing is cooler than a heli just hanging in the air!

TJin, good one. That one almost whizzed right by

Once I thought more about it, yeah, it's all those reasons; but I think that for me, I don't know another hobby I can do locally that provides the adrenaline rush.

BASE Jumping's out, since there's no towers nearby.

Golf? Frustrating, yes (the way I play it); but no adrenaline fix

Stamp collecting? Nah.

Shooting? Yes; but only if somebody's shooting the apple off my head

Heli-skiing? I live in Ga... 'nuf said.

Yep, must be the ol' seratonin re-uptake that does it.
