Questions
What is a "thrust bearing spacer" (page 18) and is it a requirement? I don't have one in my kit?

Also,

Page 17, "Sprague Shim", I have two of these in the kit. Do I use BOTH of these on Autohub Drive Gear?

With my kit, the earlier metal frame one with 710mm bldes, I didnt have the modded maingear/one way hub. I do plan to upgrade this though in the near future once I get some spares in.

One thing I noticed, you MIGHT or might not have this issue...the tail drive crown gear has a tendency (on mine) to go out of kilter.

It rocks slightly so causes an uneven meshing action which can cause wear on the tail drive shaft...not the shaft within the boom but the shaft within the clamp halves.

A thrust bearing was supplied too, for the main shaft...fits under the bottom bearing block. I have not fitted this yet being ok with the standard ballrace....which gets oiled regular and has held ok.

Maybe I should fit this bearing? open to suggestions....does it replace the ballraced bearing?

I did find the spacing/shimming of the main gear and shaft to be quite a chore. The brass spacer had to be filed down to get the clearance along with having to make a shim to place between the bottom mast stopper and the bearing...this shim has to be quite thin so as not to interfere with the bearings outer case.

I also had an issue with the tail drive take off bevel (the metal one driven by the main gear assy crown gear) there is a keyway that didnt quite line up so when I fastened the allen screw in the bevel gear; it sat right on the shoulder of the keyway luckily I found it during an afterflight check, it was wobbling on the shaft slightly.

The shaft got removed and the keyway was filed out to extend its surface.

Quality takes........time!

My kit came with thrust bearings for both sides of the mainshaft and I did put them in. I know Bill suggests taking the top one out and putting a radial bearing in place which I may do but I haven't run into a problem with the mainshaft up/down movement and the way I like to hammer on the collective I figure some thrust bearings on both sides of the mainshaft is a good idea. According to the comparison chart the 'dual thrust bearing' setup comes with all versions of the pred. kits.

The build manual sucks but the details on where to put the main gear assembly shims is in there, just have to read every bit of the manual and study the poor pictures. I'll look at mine and see if I can remember how I assembled this part.

Would be nice if Century read these threads and asked you guys to update their manual. Seems like for the cost of a heli (or two) that you could provide an extremely good document and instruction.

Is one of the reasons for such poor documentation that modifications take place too rapidly?

PS: I think today is the day to smack down the cc and wait for the ups man. Sure I will be following this thread closely.

Torenhg, the Canadian distributor is aware but I’m sure it’s along way to get to the right people to make those changes, (that is my guess). They do monitor these threads all we have to day is keep the information flowing.

Lane, I have sent of your email on missing parts and I’ll wait for a reply. I know Phil was getting ready to fly out of town on business (Helicopter) so it might take a moment to get a reply.

Spring I think on Monday it’s Swift-flying time.

thanks, for me, I'll just use these threads, downloaded the manual and will use this info to update / supplement.

Thoughts on 23 vs 26 cc? Another ? i see the ESS is only on the carbon frame, what is the reason, does vibration effect the metal frame less?

I bought the Hansen 26cc engine and am very happy with it. Just my opinion but I wouldn't consider getting a stock engine.

The manual has been an issue for a long time and is obvious that Century had the opportunity to make a better manual for the NX kits and it obvious they didn't. There is only a couple of places where they even changed the manual for the NX, the rest is pre-NX pictures and build.

I think the ESS is a very 'worth it' add on. My guess is it's not included in the metal framed heli's as a cost savings. If you get a kit without the ESS, I'd suggest buying it. Also I bought the front mount tail servo kit, the carbon frame has the elevator servo relocation already built into the frame. By the time you add the ESS and elevator servo relocation to the metal SE kit you are just about at the cost of the carbon kit.

Another option I added was the metal A arm for the elevator. The plastic one looks plenty beefy but I was scared off if it by the reports of some failing, probably only affected early Predator kits.

Another mod I did was to change the gear ratio - stock is 6.28 - I changed the pinion from 14T to 13T, now it's 6.77 ratio. 6.28 felt a little too low for my flying - sport aerobatics.

The Condor is actually a pretty good deal when you consider is comes with some very expensive main blades. If you want a cruiser, that'd be a nice one.

So the radial bearing would pop out and the thrust bearing would fit in?

Sorry to sound a bit dim but like mentioned before, the manual stated very little. It shows both the SE and standard builds and thats it.

Maybe an updated version of the manual could be made up and posted here on this site? or even one of two pics with labels on components with an explanation to help? could be worth thinking about.

The Mods as featured already do a pretty good job as it is...maybe a compilation?

LOL... hey when considering a 23cc or 26cc, consider that Zenoha will not warranty the 26cc because hanson modified it. Also, you get half the runtime because it uses more fuel as well.

MY BUILD THREAD UPDATE (This is a build thread you know )

I did get two thrust bearings, one for the top of the mast and one for the bottom of the mast. The manual says to insert a thrust bearing shim on the bottom of the main shaft, then put the thrust bearing on. I don't have a thrust bearing shim anywhere. So the build has come to a stand-still at this point.

Gonna try finding one today at the LHS's...

On mine, the thrust bearing goes on over top of the radial bearing. The manual shows this.

So how thick is the shim meant to be?

I can see the shim mentioned, page 18? its for the SE version....the upper part of the lower page shows the regular Predator setup...I recieved the thrust bearing with my kit but nothing mentioning if its to be fitted at all.

Shows the shortcomings of the manual and any updates. Mine is the normal Predator, not the SE. The radial bearings have done ok so far, the first set lasted about a year. They are no the best bearings but with a dab of oil applied with a small artist brush they last ok.

I reckon the thrust bearing needs fitting to mine, I dont 3D or anything but there is a substantial load on that bearing.

I can say that I would rather have the Hanson or toxic modified engine it will run smoother and In my opinion longer as a result than the stock one.

as for fuel economy were did you get half on run time? I know I am new to the Gasser ranks but I have the G26 Hanson 3D max.
I can fly at 12000rpm/1650hs for 20-25 min with fuel to spare on a 16oz tank. and its getting better the more fuel I put through it.
If you get twice the economy with the stock one that's almost an hour?
I just don't think there is that much difference in fuel usage.

Definitely get the modified engine
