After attempting to convert my Fury to a gasser using a BME G90 I've given up on the conversion engine route and I'm buying a Spectra G from one of the guys in the club.

Anything in particular I should know about the care and feeding of a gasser?

First of all, you'll need to get a larger line of credit from your bank.

Next, you have to have a lot of patience and a lot of technical know-how. The parts for these gassers (at least in my experience) are not ready for sale off the shelf like some of the other helicopters are. I waited about 6 months for a custom Zimmerman muffler to be made to fit my Spectra-G, and I'm still not sure it's the right size because I am still waiting on the custom engine to be made for the same heli which will hopefully fit with the custom fan and custom shroud. I've seen guys go so far as to using CNC machines to make frames to fit a Zenoah engine to Trex 700N hardware because there is no other way to get the machine they want. It would be nice if gassers were as mainstream as nitro machines, but for the moment they are not so each one ends up being a personalized highly modified work-of-art.

gas
I have been flying gas helicopters since miniature came out with the 1005 years ago, I fly Vario and Century also, other than doing something dumb and sticking one in the ground the day to day issues are nothing but minor.

I am still on my first gasser, its over two years now.

I bought a Century Predator, with the 23cc Zenoah. I have some experience with nitro helis so the building was pretty much the same. Attention to detail is important of course. The instruction book was quite detailed but the setup was lacking in detail...especially in relation to the throttle curve setup.

The initial cost of buying a gasser is quite a chunk of your wage, but running costs are good. for me 41pence for 45 mins of flight is very cheap. Parts costs are not that bad, but a crash could see me shelling out £200-£300 depending on severity

You will need good servos and a decent gyro, goes without saying, and a good size flight pack is a must. I use a 3700mah pack on 4.8 volts. Soon to be fitted is a 'Jewel' Generator of Raja's fame this will provide not only the primary source of power but will keep the flight pack charged up too....as a handy backup. Worth thinking about, having a gasser crash because of a duff pack is not good.

My Predator cost about £1500 (UK price) without the radio, I could spend the same amount in a Bar...and later on...pee the results away in the Bar toilets

So go for it!!

I hear nothing but good things about the Spectra, neat looking heli.

Quality takes........time!

I guess it was just the lighting and the angle, but they looked like they had a 45 degree angle bend in them right where the leave the bottom plate. With the other picture I can see clearly they are the same gear as on my Spectra.

You're not having to put a loop of fuel tubing around the back gear to keep them from spreading?

Picked up the Spectra on the way home this evening, it's now sitting up on the shelf next to the Fury and the Raptors

Haven't had time to really dig in and determine all the details, but so far the list of equipment includes a Hatori pipe, Radix blades, GV-1 gov, Logictech LGT 6100T gyro and tail servo kit, Voltmagic voltage meter, and one of Raja's Jewel generators.

I'm very confident that the machine is well setup, Raja checked it over when the previous owner acquired it last season. It has probably flown less than a dozen times since then and the builder didn't put many flights on it either or so I'm told. In any case it looks like it was just built, perfectly clean and assembled well.

What I need to figure out is the proper oil and ratio to mix at, which grade of fuel (regular, mid, or premium), and what it uses for spark plugs so I can pickup a spare or two.

Right now, other than those few items, it's RTFM and start on the learning curve for this particular beast. Fortunately the original owner took the time to print out the manual and drawing files and put them into binders, nice to have the documentation at hand and not need a computer to reference the CD.

If the weather cooperates, I'll fly it for the first time this weekend. I don't expect it to fly all that much different than the Fury, but I could be mistaken on that part...

It is my understanding that premium gas will give you less power, less heat, and a smoother running engine--but there is a lot of debate on this matter. Some people are running Coleman Fuel in their engines which doesn't have the gasoline smell, but is also very low octane so you risk frying your engine if you run it too lean.

A ratio of synthetic oil 32:1 seems to be common, although some people try to lean it out to 40:1.

Seems to me the best thing to do is to use the exact same fuel/oil the previous owner was using so your needles will be set correctly.
