I was flying my 700 E 12S with CC110HV and Scorpion 4035-560 and all was going well but in the middle of the flight, I noticed that the motor seemed a little inconsistent with the RPMs. I flew it a little more and then noticed a significant power drain and also that there was smoke coming out of it. I hit throttle hold and brought it down and while coming down, there were flames coming out of it!

When I got to the heli, there were no more flames. It seemed that the only thing that had flamed out was the motor. The ESC was fine, both 6s Lipos were fine and there was no problems with any of the other electronics. I thought that was a good save and lucky but I was wondering why that happened. Gear mesh was not tight, perfect.

I'll be sending the motor back because it's not all that old, only about 30 flights on it so far.

Doh!
Sorry to hear it man.
Lucky (or not so lucky) you only cooked a motor!
Hope you have it sorted soon.

I fried a few NEUs back in the day on higher power setups. Kinda turned me off to the bigger 'leckies I think

I did have a 600 flame out, burning the motor, ESC and 611 Gyro. Actually the 611 monitor unit was on fire. That was scary. My first thought was blow it out but I was about 5 feet away and the rotor blades were still spinning. Even then I was puckering my lips and trying to blow it out from that distance. Seems ridiculous in hindsite but I was just doing that out of lack of other things to do.

Some of the connectors on the Scorpion motors have cold solder joints. After having the same problem I now re-solder all the motor connectors before I fly them for the first time. The newer production motors are suppose to have better solder joints.

I resoldered new connectors on the motor. I'm just not sure what happened.

I would open the motor up and check the windings, its sounds like you may have overheated it.

Joe,

If the motor is still under warranty I wouldn't open it up at all. Opening it up may void the warranty. Also, re-soldering it may void the warranty too.

just my 2 cents.

Send it back untouched. My scorpion had a cold soldered joint. It was found during their inspection.

The scorpion is an excellent motor but you need to remove those stick connectors and put on some better ones. Apparently they made quite a few with cold solder joints at the connector. After that my HK4035 has been very reliable. Actually I think it is more efficient that most other motors of that size.

I'm sending the motor back. I'm not going to open it up. Lucien was good about getting me an RMA number while he was away at a trade show. I did change the plugs to large Castle 5.5mm connectors instead of the small ones enclosed.
