I'm no throw down 3D whiz, but.....

I'd recommend learning all of the orientations first.

Then learn them while moving, (i.e. fast forward sideways inverted).

You can always learn the stick movements to a tic toc or a backwards inverted loop. I knew a guy that could do a piro flip(just one), but.... He could NOT do a figure 8. He could barely do FFF.

It is when it goes wrong, and the heli is now in inverted comming at you fast. Whats up doc?

The question is when it goes wrong.... will you be ready?

Or....

Are you heading toward the local hobby shop looking for the parts that where sold out on-line?

This is a common ? around here i basicly You can progress to some thing new or try 3d when you can go out and fly with out thinking about what the next stick input should be. when you can fly with out think like when you started driving you didnt go out to a major 5 lane free way and learn you slowly progress and when you feel confortable put the heli up in the air loop in the middle try 2 hold inverted, through a roll in and try to put the heli in awarkward and recover when you can recover with out thinking then try to put a routine togather. run thorough it section by section high up so you can recover. once you do it bring the heli in closer and lower.

only way to get to 3d and not kill your self is stick time and stick time and more stick time

Once your ready for something new how do you know what the sticks need to do to make the heli do a maneuver? Is that just feel and practice? I'm at that level but I have no clue what to do.......... I do spend alot of time on the sim but I kinda get lost when try'n to come up with something. Any tips or pointers?

+ 1 Phoenix sim, its INVALUABLE , when i want to try something in real life , i try it on my 450 first up really high and practice, then take the 600n up really high and give it a crack , im practacing FF aileron rolls at the momnent , i found them harder than a elevator loop or roll

The sim is great for orientation of the heli and stick placement.

Example; to learn inverted hovering, it becomes nerve racking with your real heli.....the chance of crashing and having to strain looking up so high, so far away.

But with the sim, you can practice right in front of you inches off the ground. So, start in a hover, then perform a back flip (first 3D manuver!). A back flip is a stationary half loop to inverted. As your heli is flipping to inverted, you will be adding NEGITIVE pitch.

Here is the beauty of it, if you crash, just press the reset button! No need to order spare parts!! Once you master the back flip, then try to hover inverted.

Now you will notice the collective stick is backwards. Down stick / zero throttle is up for the heli. Your rudder is backwards, and it depends if the heli is nose in or tail in. (I still have problems with this, trying to remember which is which)

The aileron / roll cyclic is normal tail towards you, backwards nose in. The elevator is backwards tail towards you, normal nose in.

As your learning to fly right side up, start with the basic manuvers. Loops, rolls, stall turns, AUTOS!!! Auto's are very important, should you run out of fuel or the motor dies (trust me it will), you will need to bring your heli back to the ground.....safely.

Anytime you want to learn a new manuver, start with the sim first...then try it for real.

when you started driving you didnt go out to a major 5 lane free way
I thought this was funny cause this is EXACTLY what my mother did to me! And then had nerve enough to complain that I was going too slow (was doing the speed limit)! I don't recommend it to flying though and I don't know if I'll use the same technique for when I have kids. Yeah, it's just practice and getting the balls to actually try it the maneuver.
Once your ready for something new how do you know what the sticks need to do to make the heli do a maneuver? Is that just feel and practice? I'm at that level but I have no clue what to do
Then you're not ready to do the maneuver. If you don't know the stick movements for a particular maneuver, then don't try to do it. This is the point of the sim, to learn the stick movements. If you don't have a sim, have someone explain to you what the stick movements are and go up retardedly high and try it out.

...now where was I, dh/dt = BS-dx/dt
I will fly you forever... till earth do us part
