How would it handle? Would it even take off?

Sure it would. The Evo is designed to be either a 30-class or 50-class using the same airframe.

When using a 30-class motor, it is common to run 550mm blades. Using those blades with a 50-class motor you'll need to either run a governor or adjust the pitch curves to prevent overspeeding, but it'll fly just fine.

Autos will be a bit more exciting and you won't get as much collective response with the smaller blades. Other than that I doubt you'll notice much difference.

Try putting a Limiter on the helicopter so as not to over rev. Works like a Governor but limits instead. You can set it up so that your RPM will not go higher that whatever you set it.

I'm a local Chicago rep, ping me direct if you need help.

550s would work but the engine won't really be loaded. Can I ask why you are looking to use the shorter blade?

I have a Logo 500 3D with 550 blades and its size is not that far from the EVO 50 and it just got me thinking.

Paul...I may have to take you up on that offer. This is my first nitro build and I need all the help I can get. I'm still not sure what things I would need besides what's in the heli.

I've had a nitro buggy in the past and so I know I need a starter, a glow plug and of course, fuel. I have yet to see someone's gear for a nitro heli. That's the only way I would know.

Offer stands but we should work on it in a little better weather. PM me for contact details and pointers to local heli hotspots...
