I was discussing this at the field yesterday with another flyer. When do you need to rebind the radio and receiver? I have been using the DX7 and AR7000 for two seasons now and I have never done this after changing any settings.

The main example was changing the settings in a Spartan gyro. Do you have to rebind after changing these settings?

Do you have to rebind? If so when and why?

There is no reason to rebind unless you're changing your fail safe.

I would think, like stated, to change your fail safes. I have never rebound any set up since I started using a Dx7 2yrs ago. Oh, not true, I did rebind when I went to the 9303.

It's interesting because I've heard/read this every now and then around the field and here on RR. I've never done this and have never had a problem.

You bind to the initialization settings you want the RX to power up to while it establishes connection with the TX (to prevent overdriving/binding servos and putting ESCs into setup mode etc before connection with the TX is established) - Only the throttle channel bind setting translates to the fail-safe condition - All other channels hold last known position during actual fail-safe

If you use the radio trim or sub-trim to trim your tail you may need to re-bind so the gyro will calibrate to the new trim value during initialization rather than the old stored bind value - GY401 is susceptible to this - If you use the radio trims and re-center the gyro (toggle Rate/HH mode) it can re-center back to the old value during a slow connect power cycle if you don't re-bind with the new value - If you trim your tail mechanically there's no need to worry about it

1 - Bind RX to TX
2 - Setup heli
3 - Re-bind to initialization/fail-safe preferences if different from original bind
4 - Re-bind to changed tail trim values as necessary

Why would you ever use sub-trim or trim on your tail? I've never done this although I have read that you can get away with it on the 401. I never use this method. Also I have never setup a gyro in normal mode since the first introduction of the 401 and then the 502, 601, 611, Spartan, I only use HH mode and setup mechanically then go and fly. I never fly it in normal mode/non-heading hold and do all that trimming non-sense.

So I still don't know why you would need to re-bind unless changing the fail safe/throttle setting as stated above.

You asked I answered - Those are conditions that warrant re-binding

Scale modelers like using rate mode for more realistic characterized tail

I don't fly in rate mode either but I do like to setup in rate mode as a personal preference to toggle a switch once to neutralize vs waggle the rudder a few times - HH gyros take away all the good setup fun - It's not setup until it flies well in rate mode
