Larry had his new Mongoose out for it's first public showing at our LFF.
Mechanics will one day grace the inside of a scale job probably.

Well...It hovers real nice so for.

And if you get tired of looking at orange (eyeball color fatigued), turn it around and it is yellow.

You have me wondering now.
I could have sworn that it was two different colors on each side, but after thinking on it some and looking again at pictures, it just might be that the parts in direct sun light turn different color.

Maybe Larry will spot this topic and fill us in some on Mongoose details.

I was busy looking over the neat little on board generator thingie.

Well, Alvin told me he had posted these pics while I was at the field today. He took more pics with the canopy off and they will be posted this evening or tomorrow.

For the record, it is just orange. For some reason, the camera has a hard time with the color. The guys from air star took pics during the build and test flying and it was never the same color twice! I have yet to take a picture and get it to look the same twice.

It was a bit on the windy side today at the field, but the size of the Mongoose made the wind a non-issue! I made another hovering flight this afternoon still trying to get comfortable with this big beast (it's my first gasser)and tweeked the needles/curves just a bit more. Finally, I had no more excuses and took her out to the flight line for her first forward flight under my control. All I can say is WOW! This helicopter is smooth as silk and big enough to see easily (the orange color doesn't hurt either)at the far ends of the field. For such a large helo, the Mongoose is surprisingly fast. With it's size and swinging 830mm blades, I don't think it will 3d, but the handling was crisp. Transistions from forward flight to hover and landing approaches were smooth and held no surprises. Over all, a VERY pleasent machine to fly.

Sadly, Alvin said he was so engrossed watching it fly, he forgot to take pictures of it blasting up and down the runway! Maybe next time.

More Mongoose Pictures
Yep, Larry did a good job with forward flight today, smooth, nice quiet sound, and uneventful. The color does make for easy visibility in the distance.

The Mongoose owner, Larry, will be available soon to answer questions about all the inner workings of his machine.
Quite a fine bit of kit though.

The guys at air star can to a torque tube version, but they don't recommend it. The belt drive has a few less parts, is VERY smooth and like all belt drives, less espensive in a crash.

If you're asking this question because you have scale in mind, like I do, air star has an elevated tail drive in their fuselages that lets you use the belt drive. After I finish up with the Sea King I'm working on, I'll be turning this into a Huey gunship.

Rustoleum orange in the rattle can is a pretty close match. I used that on the blade tips.

That's a very neat and clean setup. Is that a 260RC engine? How much does the heli weigh?

Yes, it is the RC26 engine w/the Zimmerman exhaust. As for weight, I don't know exactly (wife got mad and threw the scale away), but I would guess it's in the 15 pound range.

I currently fly a E flight bird and looking to make the leap into bigger birds. The air star Mongoose looks sweet! Out of ignorance, how much is a RTF air star Mongoose like the one you have lrogers?
