Honesty is the best policy! If you've seen me fly you'd understand. My hands literally shake and I'm sweating profusely. Funny thing though I'm up to FFFw/fig8's and simple piro's. Everything I do with the heli makes me fell good. Even though I'm shakin' I have a rush you can't believe. I know some understand

I wish I still flew!!!

I have been flying helis since the late 70's and planes before that
I have never been rude to anyone asking questions about this hobby . I never fly without a spotter that will stop man or beast from getting the flight path of my heli or plane and answer any questions they might have, and I do the same for him or anyone else I am at the field with . I personally can not imagine flying at a schoolground or park where other people are there and could be in the path of a heli or plane .
another thing I just dont see the point of being a smartass to an inquiring public regardless if they blind ,crippled or crazy it is just not good for our hobby . The next guy your popping off to might hold the keys to your flying site . And heaven forbid one of the guys posting this crap would happen hurt someone with a heli at a park or playground without a spotter or flightline and some of these wiseass post made it to your trial. oh well it wont be me on trial but something to think about anyhow. that is my 2 cents dont flame me I wont respond to some smartass response .

MattJen, +1.

That's the difference smart people will understand that it's not a toy. I never had even seen RC heli's before I saw one doing 3D at a field, I kept way back and enjoyed the show it's pretty obvious these are dangerous...

I didn't ask any questions, but I ordered one the next day .

As I said I still get some people talking to me when flying but you can really notice the difference, some wait until you are changing a pack etc until they come over and ask smart(er) questions whereas others will just come right up when you're flying, not that I mind too much but I tend to revert back to hovering or landing, pretty boring..

last summer I was at a local lake that has a baseball field that no one plays on; anyway A guy walked to me and started talking(scared the hell out of me). He started to ask me to "do that maneuver again!" and kept saying "what the hell?" It turned out to be a helicopter pilot that happen to drive by and was curious how an RC helicopter can fly backwards or upside down! So I landed so he can take a look at it. Then he ask "where can I get one?" Real nice guy, but scare the hell out of me!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have one! how about the guy that has a few helis that put together cant make a decent 1, mediocre pilot and still has an opinion on every body's equipment, helis or flying! That's Annoyance there!

I dont suffer from mental iIlness, I actually enjoy mine!

i hate the "awkward watchers" they just stand near you watch you fly act liek they know you and get a little to close looking at the controller then leave without saying anything... and when you stare at them they look away you know they wanna ask something lol

The spectators that don't say a word are the best for me, however, I usually fly where there's only a remote possibility of someone coming around. Reading my total posts on this topic will clarify. Some day I will welcome spectators. Until I am very comfortable I'd like to be left alone and get advice here.

I wish I still flew!!!

pretty interesting responses from everyone....
as for me I don't find it annoying just scary...I'm too new of a pilot to fly safely and carry on a conversation. I have been flying and have been so engrossed in my heli that when someone comes up from behind and starts talking, it scares the crap out of me. I then have to regain my composure and land the heli. I'm sure as I get more comfortable and increase my skill level I will feel better in carrying on a conversation while flying. Also, do remember, make sure to represent yourself and rc heli's in the best light possible. That stranger that walks up to you could make their opinion about RC Heli's and those that fly them by that sole experience with you. If you are cordial then they will walk away with a positive feeling about the hobby. If you are rude, they could walk away with a very negative feeling about RC's and their pilots in general. Remember that first impressions go a long way. Having said that...I WANT THAT SHIRT!!!!

Does anyone ever get bothered by someone just stopping and trying to chat while you are flying. I understand their interest but it puts me at a disadvantage because my instinct is to look at them! The other day I was flying in a field and out of the blue a guy walks right under the heli! I broke into a sweat and had to bring it in.
I don't mind at all. I'll show them some nice moves, land and explain to them whatever they want to know. Promoting the hobby is my number one priority.

I was a little bugged this morning and it is my fault. I invited my grandpa to the flying field this morning. He would walk right up to me while I was flying and start to ask me those usual curious questions I felt like I couldn't ask him to stop talking while I was flying. Oh well.

right 3dhiro if you dont promote the hobby then less people will fly and things will be more expensive if alot of people flew and purchased servos/gyros/helis we would

1.get cheaper prices on everything as competition heated up
2.get better things as companys raced to out develop eachother kinda like this year with sooo many 50's coming out
3.more flying sites
4. the list goes on

I agree 100% with that statement. I don't care who comes up and talks to me whether I am flying or just hanging out, I will talk about heli's until they have had enough!! It's cool when you are flying to show people the positive and negative collective aspect of our helis and then land them and actually show them how the blades change pitch!! Most people have no idea how a heli can fly upside down!!

I try and educate people on the art of flying and be as nice about it as possible. I have had people spend hundreds of dollars trying to get a good setup but the didn't have anybody to help them so they got upset and almost quit the hobby until I talked to them, helped them out, trimmed out their heli for them, and then helped them learn to fly!! It is an awesome feeling when you see the smile on their face beaming ear to ear after their first flight!!

I have a fairly big lot across the street from my apartment. i am still learning to hover. but one day one of my neighbors was out walking his dog and he came over to talk to me. it wasn't a problem because my heli was already on the ground. he told me he had a heli a long time ago. the only thing that that bothered me was that when i walked away from my heli, he was standing about 5 feet to the left of it waiting with his dog for me to lift off. he was just staring at it waiting. i was about 10 yards behind my heli. you would think someone that has flown before would understand the dangers of standing that close? so i told him politely. i don't think it is a good idea that you stand there I can't control it very well. he just stood there? so i very slowly gave it enough throttle for the rotors to spin and shut it off again. i think he got what i was saying cause he moved right besides me and as i was trying to hover he never said a word. he waited till i landed to ask more question. it just was weird!

I finally created a topic that peaked a lot of interest. Cool!
I havent been able to fly lately due to weather. I want to encourage others to explore the hobby. I'm a year and a half into the trex450 and still no 3d action. It scares me to death to even try. I cant afford the club thing and there arent many heliers here.

I wish I still flew!!!

I seem to be one of the only ones here on the military base in japan that flys heli's and I am the only one I know that flys a nitro bird.
People have come up a few times and asked questions, but luckily the were respectful enough to wait until I landed. If they do not wait though, I just ignore them till I land and then tell them sorry but I could hear them over my nitro engine. Its BS but it keeps me from appearing rude to them. I have no problem promoting this hobby, but I will not allow myself to be distracted and crash my heli to answer their questions. They are not going to pay for my mistake so I concetrate on what I am doing first.

i found out my potential when i forgot i was flying in real life, and not on the sim. but that not realizing is what has brought me as far as i am now. so dont worry about crashing, its only $20 or so each crash.
for me, its equipment faliure that gets me these day's
