its good insurance, that 2.4 is not keen on low voltage
The voltage issue has only been related in the past to Spektrum system and this has now been addressed I believe.

I have never found any voltage issue with the Futaba 2.4 systems.
The servo's normally stop working before the system closes down.

HI MAT

that sounds a good way mat. i dont think you will have any problem.

sounds like good insurance to me,

and MODTRON is right. that spectrum was more prone to low voltage

than futaba,

Matt, You really need to bring that turbine to Ircha this year!

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

Hi whirlybird, I have only ever flown with 2 stroke oil and have never done a back to back test with a turbine oil so I have no comparative data. However I have done 16000mins on 2 stroke oils and my engines average 70hours at 140,000rpm the best being 87 hours.
Basically I can't say I am using the best oils out there, but because the Wren runs so cool I can get away with running more ordinary oils.
If you have an engine that produces localised heat around the bearings then you will need the best oil you can get.
Having serviced many of these engines now, I notice that the bearings in my Wren are never discolored and have never run hot. They wear out just because they things that spin fast wear out, but never through heat breaking them down. Hope this helps..

And to add having seen Bells strip down in minutes and change bearing video i could clearly see the NON coked engine and non scorched oxidised engine.

Having looked at other combustion chambers i have to say it is good to know Wren have got the air fuel mix balance almost perfect.

If you tried to get the engine to run any cooler you would have to divert more air fuel down that turbine shaft tunnel onto both bearings and this would take more power from the turbine itself... thus making it less powerful..

It runs cooler than other brands, although on my jetcat PHT3 i ran it for 25 hrs with 2 stroke, no problem at all..

I look forward to looking at mine in 40hrs time, and i will photo it, as well..

I have been flying today.Despite the snow and lack of camera, had to use the phone camera.

it has been nearly 4 weeks since flying, due to weather and other commitments, but it was really nice to get out there today on a cold but lovely clear day..

I wanted to get the machine flying far out and higher as my confidence has grown with it immensly over the last year.. ( year in November)
i still find it a real joy to fly, hasnt given me any problems at all,
and against the blue sky and white snow the machine looked great in all orientations...

Hi there, looking good with your Heli! nice colours.

I am close to getting mine up and running, but have put it all in a Box for now:

Blasted project...I bought what was meant to be the Pred Max 90...but got the gasser instead. No frames (the rear most lower ones+ the landing gear frame) and the clutch fan hub was the NX version suited for the gasser...so no brass collet either.

Its been a f67k around for sure. Got me a Lathe to remachine the clutch fan hub to take the collet and reduce the height too. about 4mm needs to be trimmed off the height for the NX clutch system.

I thought the re machined bit was ok, but it cant have been...there was a wobble...only slight..but enough to be no good.

So I will have to get in touch with Century Uk and see if they have what I need..ie the smaller old type clutch and fan hub and the clutch bell too.

Really pissed off. Spent quite a bit so far (as you will know) so not happy with the vendor of the kit (airframe) the Wren is superb otherwise.

Hi Rob,

Sorry to see you are having trouble, i think in hindsight your biggest mistake was once having realized you purchased the wrong kit, you should have then gone out and bought the correct components for your conversion, Rather than try to manufacture/make /adapt your own parts..

My advice to you would be to go out and buy the correct parts for the conversion and it will then work without any problems and you will have as much as fun as i am having with this lovely machine.

That means you need to throw away every part you have cut up/adapted/made on your lathe, you shouldn't need anything more than screw drivers, spanners and alan keys to do this conversion, it is as simple as that..

Got the frames a while back so that issue was sorted out.

I will have to change the clutch bell to suit the older clutch assy...then it should all slot together just fine.

Bloody annoyed with the bloke who sold the kit to me though...He wanted a detailed account of this project to post up on his site.........me thinks he can 'go whistle'

I nearly spat my tea out on that comment.

That is a bit of a nerve after the trouble you have had, but I am really happy you are finally getting it sorted though..

Have a good new year out there!

predator coming up for 80 hrs this month, and still is flying trouble free..

Had a flight yesterday, found it relaxing to cruise around the sky, no one else was around so it was nice and peaceful at my club..

Hello Matt, I've just noticed that you have done 80hours with your Predator, is this the one in the pictures above with the wren engine in it and how many times has the engine been serviced, and how much does it cost?

WOW,
had forgotten this thread existed, time does fly..
In answer to the questions, I have had no issues with it, the turbine has proved to be really reliable, as has my other Wren, the jetcat is retired and in a box, and has been for nearly 2 years, i converted the old Hotcat when it came back to me to a machine using the Wren and zealous mechanics,

this is how it looked at the field today, i was freezing, and ended up on my own as the fog came down, all i can say is i am thankful for the bright painted canopy, as today i was so carried away with the flying it suddenly disapeared into the fog LOL, a bit of a butt clenching moment, but it i could still see it JUST..

After that i landed as i dont like to be flying on my own in a field as large as ours at EMHC, particularly from a safety point of view.

Hi Matt, long time since I posted here on this site.

Well, story so far? sold the Pred/Wren to a bloke in the UK..decided I had got the tee shirt after a few flights. Very impressive to get to operate such a machine...but thought if it crashed I would be inconsolable

What on earth happened with Wren? I know Sara (?) and hubby left the company..and then it went very quiet on HFreak on all things wren..or so it seemed.

Is Bell bloke still about? Dont know if I will ever get back into turbines again..if I did I would go the Trex 700/Wren 44 route. One of the lads here at work has the nitro 700. Very impressed with the quality of the parts, and how available spares are. Even sold my Pred gasser too...only got the Rex 450 left..and a Sceadu 30 which is never flown, due to fuel supplies running out.

Anyways, hows your turbine journey? still got the preddie?

Quality takes........time!

Hi Rob,
How is life in the falklands! 6000 miles that way -----> ha

Yeah I still have my predator, it has been a very faithful and reliable machine, has never let me down, I love flying it, and it still is smooth as it ever was.
Have had to replace mast shim a couple of times, as it wore out, but I did an upgrade where i made 2 and that has stopped the wear.

Turbine still starts everytime, it has really been a worthwhile investmant, and done my confidence in turbine machines and scale a real load of good.

Bell is still around flying his lovely scale electric, and he has his predator, although it is in bits after a mishap on a photo shoot involving a mountain. but knowing Bell i am sure once he has time he will rebuild it along with his turbine.
