And you were right! Trouble followed.

Maybe we can get the Mare Island Watch as an ally.

Funny, we've seen some guys race by but I've never seen what the article described as a Sideshow. I've been there most Saturdays for a year or so now!

We're like the dolphins that get caught in fishing nets. Based on my conversations, the City didn't intend to kick us out. We're just caught up in the process.

They seem willing to let us use the field. At this point it's just working out the details. Of course, the devil is in the details.

Guys,

I was just reading about the situation at Mare Island.
We have been going through something similar with the Buttonwillow airport (home of the Bakersfield RC club), and we did a campaign where mailed real letters to the county supervisors to make them aware of the situation. So far, it seems we are on the right track and might get the field back.

So, if any of you has the name (or names) of the people at the city of vallejo that has the power here, it could be interesting if all the users (and non users) of this field could send letters. We could post a "model" letter here, that each person could customize. But having physical letters, instead of emails, seems to be a powerful method

BTW, I started flying at Mare Island this year, but everytime I go there is just me (I have met Rod a few times)

Hope this helps
Jack

Ron, my friends and I had shared some drinks and had kareoke together with City Council Hermie Sunga before. With City Council Jess Malgapo, I had played golf with him. Occassionally I still see both of them. Maybe try to mention my name, David Isip, and let them know I am one of the many Filipino flyers that enjoy Mare Island. Hopefully they might still remember me.
I might not have access to the internet starting tomorrow as I will be out of town. Good luck with your mission.

David - thanks for the information. I'm not above name dropping.

I did point out the benefits of our group to the Public Works Director. We deter vandalism, dumping, and pick up trash. I pointed out it costs the city nothing to allow us to use the field. The Public Works Director agreed our use of the field is mutually beneficial.

Thanks to everybody else for the ideas going forward. I hope we don't need to use them!

Jack - assuming we get back to the field. There are about 7 regulars that show up on Saturday's around 10am and stay until about 3pm. I hope to meet you soon!

Yesterday I drove back from Santa Rose to Berkeley via Vallejo and took the M.I. exit from Hwy 37 ... countless huge, red 'no trespassing' stencils on all surfaces. Now I know why. Was there an incident that triggered all this?

The City Project Manager told me it was building vandalism. There was an article in the paper than mentioned motorcycle and car drifting, drag racing, etc.

As far as I know there wasn't a single incident.

I left a message for hte City Project Manager last week but it went unreturned. I'll call again next week and let everybody know.

I fly by the Port of Oakland quite often and have witnessed (heard, mostly) side show B.S. on the wide roads used by trucks to haul freight. The tire marks actually obscure the lane paint and of course spectators standing a few feet away from drifting cars risk severe injuries or death, which is why on-lookers get criminal charges as well as drivers. I call the Oakland P.D. whenever I hear it.

I spoke to the City of Vallejo's Project Works Directory Executive Secretary today.

She said the Project Works Director or herself will get back to me tomorrow and they should 'have something for us'.

Have you guys seen this? This is all we need at this delicate stage of negotiations:

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?s...york&id=9237643

I hope someone is in a position to point out to the city honchos that RC flying is safer than motorcycling, skiing, amusement parks, and drinking, all of which are sanctioned by our society.

Dear Mr. Kleinschmidt,

In summary:

The Mare Island Flyers are an informal group of model helicopter pilots who’ve met for over 13 years on a Mare Island empty lot to enjoy flying with our friends. We were originally told it was OK to use the lot by a City of Vallejo Police officer.

On August 12, 2013, the Mare Island Flyers were asked to leave Mare Island by a Black Talon Security officer. We complied with the request and have stop using the lot. About the same time I started the process of obtaining permission to once again start using Mare Island.

We first spoke on August 22, 2103. We agreed the Mare Island Flyers provided a benefit to the city as we deterred vandalism and dumping, and kept the area clean. At that time you stated you’d approach the Permit department in our behalf.

Since that time I’ve made weekly calls to your office asking for an update. I have yet to receive an update and messages I leave go unreturned.

We would greatly appreciate an update. I’m hoping email is an easier communication method for you and your staff.

Sincerely,
Ron McCafferty

Perhaps all interested M.I. fliers should write to ask that permission to fly be restored. Public officials usually take more notice of issues when presented by several constituents.

I sent an email to the City of Vallejo City Manager asking for an update.

I can only come to the conclusion the city doesn't want to grant permission and is hoping we'll simply go away if they ignore us.

If I don't hear from the City Manager I'll email the City Council members.

If I don't hear from the City Council I suggest a bunch of Mare Island Flyers attend a City Council meeting. Most cities allow people to address the Council on an ad hoc basis. We can make our case for permission.

I'll keep everybody posted.

I haven't heard from the City Manager so I've emailed the City Council which includes the Mayor.

I think we're going to have to attend a City Council meeting.

'Honey' isn't catching these flies....

I'm up for a City Council meeting.

Maybe preceded by a trip to the cop shop to ask for police reports on M.I. for this year.
