If your going to do anything more than hover the $3 servos have to go that’s a no brainier. Hobby City has some nice digital metal geared servos that work well for around $18. I’d spend the $50 for the metal head and tail mentioned earlier as well (that still puts the airframe cost at around $90).

You had me at Hover

I got my metal head and tail combo the other day. Let me tell ya it was money well spent. It is a clone 450sev2 head same color, just assembled with Philip head screws, instead of allen head. And I still have less than $100 bucks in the airframe. I found a scorpion 6 motor here on rr and a set of radix, and I still have less that $200 bucks in all.I all ready had an extra 401 and a 9650 The only thing I need is some servo's(maybe some JR 285's)

bmapope I'll be getting back to ya reel soon!

I have no doubt you can build a inexpensive heli, I did it. The question is how long it will last. My SeV1 has been through hell and back and still flies as true today as it did a year and a half ago. I could not count the flights it has on it. After you get it built and replace all of the parts with factory Align replacements you might have something. The hobby is about having fun and if building a clone makes you smile the better for it! Have fun guys, but I like the flying aspect of the hobby more than "bench time"

Hi easternav,

Yes, I use it now. First I removed my HDX450 head to use this head, HDX is not trex compatible and I have had a lot of problems with spare parts. Now I bought more two upgrades: one for spare (because new parts in local stores are so expensive) and another to HK-450.

This Metal Upgrade have excellent finish and it is T-Rex V2 compatible.

This store sell direct from ShenZhen, China. Very kindly and online support is available. And payment with PayPal is completely secure!

Thanks,
Evandro Heli
Inexpensive heli is not a problem, we can find inexpensive models with very good quality. CNC machines are impressive!

Plastic version is good to start, like 450 KIT Plastic US$45.16 or HK-450.

But Metal version with GF or CF frame 450 Kit Metal US$139.92 will improve the flight.

Thanks

Ok ,Got my HK450 up in the air this week with the upgraded head and tail combo plus the scorpion motor. I am really satisfied with this heli. I will be pushing it to the limits this week end and will post the report on it after.

One thing that must be replaced is the tail drive gear, Mine let loose on the third flight. The gear that ride's on the main gear slip's on the shaft, resulting in a uncontrollable piro.

I also replaced the motor mount with a metal one. The stock plastic one has a lot of flex and I just did not feel comfortable with it.

I will post my complete set up on this later

I flew my HK450 for the first time this week . I have the cheap Hextronic servos on the head , Futaba 9650 with 9257 gears and the cheap G401B gyro . It's a fantastic little heli , it flys much better than my Trex450 SE (V1) . I haven't done anything too taxing with it , but it does roll straight in both directions and tracks straight though forward and backward loops . The cheap gyro holds the tail nicely . I've already ordered a metal head and tail from Ebay , but until the standard parts develop slop or get broken , I think that I'll leave it as standard .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

I'm having so much fun with the HK450 that I've bought another one !
This time I've bought it off Ebay , it has green side frames and boom , nobody seems to want the green ones , so I got it even cheaper that the one from HobbyCity . It also comes with a fiberglass canopy and tail blades ! At the price I got it for , I don't give a stuff what colour it is !
Now I can keep one standard and stick the cheap blue bling head and tail on the other ! Maybe I should buy another for spares , or maybe I could get a scale body to cover up the green frames !

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Well I really push this bird hard on the 20 flights that I put on it and I must say it impressed some of the guys at the field because there is 3 of them flying around the field now. And one guy just had to have mine so I let it go and decided to put the funds toward a trex700 to bad they have not made a clone for it yet.
I would definitely suggest this bird to any one in the 450 market. With just a few upgrades it is a very good preforming machine. Well worth the money spent.

An ex club member turned up at out flying strip last weekend , along with a couple of other flyers . They were very impressed with the flight performance of my HK450 . The really funny thing was that they commented on how well the tail held and how constant the piros were !
I don't think that they believed me when I told them what gyro I am using .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .
