i don't think i'll ever have reason to go to Dubai, but this would be cool to check out. Quite an amazing engineering feat. 818m is almost 2684 feet, over half a mile tall!

Here it is a few months ago... They built it so quicky... every week you'd notice an additional floor or two being done...

I would love to go to Dubai, they have some of the most spectacular buildings and such there.
However, I value my life so that will never happen... its a shame

Good reason. They don't have OSHA and unions to deal with like the good ole US does.

What do you mean?

I went there as tourist and visited couple of friends there from my college years. It's very nice and safe place. If you are a racist and can not observe and respect other cultures, then stay in Indiana, PA and do not make uninformed comments.

First I'm not racist.. nice to see that is the first thing people say anymore.
I have been under the impression for years that, the UAE was not THE safest place on the planet... so bite it. Never heard or found anything diffrent.

I have been to many many places, and have experienced and DO respect many other cultures. So being smartmouthed about what YOU have no idea about isnt making you look very well at the moment.

You may have been misled or were thinking of other areas of the UAE? I've been to Dubai and have a few friends that live and work there. It seems pretty safe from my experience but haven't looked up any statistics.

The only place not safe in the UAE is within a 100 feet radius of where I fly, when I fly!!!

Yeah, I was at the first official public introduction of the project. It was at Cityscape Dubai in 2008...

By the way, I lived in New Haven/Hamden for a long time...

Yeah more or less misled...but I havent looked up any stats either, as a trip there would never happen for me. But if it was possible, i would research it.

That is funny right there! And I meant no disrespect in my first post.

I'm an avid skier and I plan to try that enclosed ski hanger next summer when it's 50 deg C (~120F) outside. Should be fun!

Here's their web site:

http://www.skidxb.com/English/default.aspx

Take your own gloves, they supply you with the jacket/pants so don't bother packing them. Don't plan to spend an entire day skiing there (unless 300ft vertical turns your crank). Ski Dubai got a little boring for me after about an hour, but I'm use to 5,200ft vertical.

I usually ski in Caucasian mountains in Gudauri which is 2500-3500m MSL (~11,000ft with a heli lift to "Kudebi" on Mi-8) and it takes me at least 24 hours to get acclimatized before I'm functional.

I know Dubai ski thing is a bunny hill, but how cool is it to do it when it's very hot outside?

Thank you for the good packing advice though!

EDIT: Packing strategy is a major aspect for an enjoyable trip IMHO.

This is where I grew up and still visit every winter...
http://www.gudauri.ge/

quote from the site:
Helicopter skiing in Caucasus became a well-known "trade-mark" of Gudauri/Caucasus.

The program has been in operation since 1989 in cooperation with Swiss travel and adventure company "Alpin Travel LTD".

Numerous slopes are available for heli-ski in backcountry of Gudauri resort.

Some of the most spectacular runs started at the altitude 4500m around Mt. Kazbegi 5044m summit glaciers.
