Well, i have 2 computers and they share the same screen(button on the monitor allows switch)

this works great, but i also have to mouse and 2 keyboards.

I was thinking of putting my soldering skills to the test and making a Y plug for the usb, so i would have the mouse plugged in at one end, and the 2 computers plugged in to the other ends.

Would this work? I was thinking i may need to put a 3 way switch in the middle.

USB ports have power on them, so it may short between the two computers. But a switch to select one or the other, not both at the same time, would work.

The way that USB works internally is that the computer supplies an address to a device, its associated with the port, yadda yadda, Long story short you can't plug two devices into the same port. As suggested above a switch would work. Or just go to newegg.com and do a search for KVM switch.
