so if i set up the rudder servo arm to be 90 degrees at center on my hawk, where should the tail slider be at? in the middle of its travel on the shaft as well?

no,, set it right where the manual tells you,, you need to offset it a bit because of the torque of the main blades,,

if your using a 401 gyro setup it up for equal travel of the pitch slider adjust the servo travel on the gyro till the slider reaches it's max travel, check to make sure the rotor doesn't hit the lever
the blades will be offset because of the way pitch slider is made
