Just got my 500 esp together and notice that when the tail pitch slider is all the way against the tail housing, the pitch slider hits the control arm as it spins. If I adjust the servo throw so it doesn't hit, it slows the servo down. Has anyone come across this problem? Any way to fix it? Thanks

What are you "adjusting" with regard to servo throw? If you're adjusting the transmitter rudder endpoints, bad boy! You're doing nothing more than really messing up the yaw rate control (pirouette rate). Nothing on the transmitter should be used to limit servo travel.

If you're adjusting the TRAVEL LIMIT on your 401 (as I recall, you're using a 401 till the GY520 is available) then you shouldn't be seeing what you're seeing.

If you pick the distance from the center of the servo wheel to the center of the ball-link on the servo so that the servo wheel travels at least 45 degrees (full stick) each way with the TRAVEL LIMIT set to 100%, without the linkage binding anywhere, you'll be good to go. It's best to set this up in NORMAL mode when you're on the bench.

Like dkshema said, adjust it mechanically correct first, then adjust the travel on the gyro (depending on which one). Would help to know gyro and radio system, type (round vs straight) of servo arm, and how far out on the arm you've got the ball link.

Thanks guys

Dave, yeah, I should have known better. Been last summer since I set one up, wasn't thinking. I think mechanically its set up right. I'll adjust the 401. But why would it hit? You'd think the slider would be able to pull all the way to the gear housing without hitting anything. The little 450 will pull it all the way without it hitting. Hmmm.

Servo is the ino lab 261, GY 401 on DX7. I'll see if I can get a picture of it. But I'll get the throw on the 401 adjusted and see how it is.

Here is a picture. Makes a ticking sound as it spins if it touches. I'm sure it will go away when I adjust the gyro. Its just annoying that it would do that as the 450 doesn't do that. Do all 500's do this?

Ok, I adjusted the gyro so the slider just about touches the tail rotor holder. When the slider moves the other direction, it still touches the control arm. If I adjust the slider so it doesn't touch the control arm, then it doesn't travel far enough out. A few mm before it gets to the tail rotor holder. Big loss in blade pitch then. I'd like full throw in both directions without it hitting anything. Would it be safe to file down part of the control arm just enough so the slider doesn't hit?

Has anyone else come across this? Is it only in the ESP version with the metal parts? I've looked here and on other sites and can't find anyone else with this problem.

You know, backing off just a hair won't affect the tail rotor control all that much. Sometimes all you need is "enough", not "too much".

Besides, in that direction, you'll have all the help you need with piro rates as that's left turn and torque will be your friend.

-----

Mine, linkage disconnected, slider all the way to the left...full travel, there is light between the two. TT installed.

-----

Remember, per your 500 manual, servo centered, pitch slider centered in its travel. Adjust your TRAVEL LIMIT for full deflection without binding in either direction (and clicking is not a good idea).

Ok, thanks. I'll adjust it.

Did you get your tt yet? If so, did it do the same thing?

Wouldn't that be the right turn direction and therefore actually be against rotor torque? Or am i looking at it wrong?

Missle -- Actually, you're right, pull forward to make the nose go right. What was I thinking! Pull for right, push for left.

Still, a half or quarter degree isn't going to affect a whole lot.

Aaron, yes, that picture IS with my TT installed....

I must have replied before I saw your last post Dave. Sounds like it should be ok then.

Thanks for all the help.

No, somehow I put up the picture, wrote some superb prose, then apparently didn't hit the Submit button.

Later on, I saw Missle's post, but didn't see my picture and stuff. I very stealthily added the picture and words to my previous post!
