Nice. I have been waiting for a test on these motors. Look forward to the updates. Will you have a data logger to compare to other motors (actro, Pletti etc..) ??

Hey Ahmet,

I really like your work, and its good to hear from someone so far away!!

The motor is an X-era 4035 4y, designed by David Bloomfield. It's supposed to be a replacement for the actro 32-4max motors, for large scale & AP applications.

There's lots of info here:

Papa,
thanks for giving their internet address. I have not heard of these XERA guys before. I am interested in an e-motor that can replace a Z-260. I have built an electric motor version of an AP heli with 180cm rotor based on Vario mechanics. The 4035/4y-300 seems to be just the perfect option. It is also very reasonably priced comparing to a say 370_40_H. It is definetly worth checking. It does not say what they are rated for continious power output though.
Cheers,
Ahmet

The 4035/4y should be good for 50A continuous. So on 12s that is about 2200w. The motor is most efficient at ~1500w. Also, I'm being pretty conservative since most of you guys are carrying expensive cameras with these motors. It's best not to stress things too much.

John Oakley has tested this motor on 12S at 25lb AUW with separate tail drive. He said the motor was ~20F above ambient after the flight...so that's good enough for me

Also, it's a little hard comparing the Actro to the X-Era. The Actro 32-4 has the same kv as my 4035/3y-400 but over 2x the Rm. So on the same voltage the 4035/3y-400 can output about 50% more power with ~the same temperature rise as the 32-4. The 4035/4y-300 will spin very slow allowing easy gear selection and should still have a bit more power than the 32-3 but at much higher efficiency.

Update,

Just did the first test flight on the 4035-3Y and holy cow does this thing have some torque. I only have one flight on it at this point but I did some aggressive climbouts and it had no problem keeping the HS constant even in aggressive collective maneuvers.

This was on the JokerWorks heli at about 27lbs with an HVX200 and RT830s

Temp was ambient upon landing, I will update on how much the packs take back.

So far this thing is looking like a beautiful alternative to the 32-4.

So, are you saying that it would be better to run more in the neighborhood of 8 or 9S, maybe an 8S2P arragement for capacity sake?
Or do you get a better efficiency/power curve between 1500-2200W vs. 1200-1700W or 1350-1900W?

You would be better to run 12S at 30 amps compared to 8S at 50 amps. Everything will run cooler. But at 12S and maximum load, you have to watch out not to exceed the max wattage of the motor or ESC. (assuming your setup will take that much power)

Sounds great Tabb. I think I'm going with one for my 10s joker setups. Can't beat the price.

Thanks

Hey. I would say this motor would replace the actro 40 series motors. Yeh! The 4030 2.5y has more power than the 32-3 in my joker 3DD.

WOW, man you did a great job modeling the motor!! These AP motors are selling WAY better than the other sizes...I'm outa the 4y, and sold another 3y to Gerd just minutes ago. I guess if I was looking for an ultra niche market...I've found it
