What are you trying to test? I think strapping down a heli is a bad idea that could lead to severe injury or death.

If you're not experienced enough to check through everything and just spool it up on the ground a safe distance away from people for the first flight I'd like to suggest seeking help from a fellow pilot.

Just run it up and hold the heli by the skids, it'll be alright!

PS Get it on video for us!

LOL

In an attempt to actually be helpful to this thread, I have not seen any test stands in a LONG LONG TIME. However, if you want to break in the engine without flying the machine, what you might want to do is look for some blade loaders and just run it up on the ground. I don't where to get them and I have only seen them in pictures, but you might want to look into it.

These motors don't need any crazy break in process, just set the needles to the factory specs, mount and fly. After a few flights, start tuning.

Strapping a heli for whatever reason is a huge no no!

It's easy to find an excuse to do wrong. Hard is not to find an excuse to do right.

Newbie Dumb Question:

I presume the problem with strapping them down has to do with some induced dynamic instability? Yes?

I strapped my Beam down to test it initially and didn't have any trouble but I guess the forces on a large bird are huge and I never even considered it. When I tested my T600N I took the blades off (main and tail) and spooled it up very carefully to prevent overspeed. Once I was sure it wasn't just going to explode on first run up (this was my first nitro bird) I reinstalled the blades, started it up to idle, and ran it up from inside the house.

What? I thought everyone ran theirs inside on cold days...

Me inside looking through three panes of plexiglass (patio door, storm door) at the heli spooling up outside on the patio...

Best way to protect yourself for flying bit is to put something between you and the source of the bits.
