I was wondering if I could get some input on good speed control for the trex 450 and 500? without breaking the bank hopefully. Just want one with a good governor mode. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks. Jack...

Castle creations has served me well for past 4 years, but the HV version's are expensive.
I'm eagerly awaiting feedback on the HV Scorpion's, as there pricing is extremely temping !!.

Another vote for the CC ESC’s. I have several different sizes and they are definitely the most bang for your buck. I have a couple that are 8 years old and have always worked perfectly. I have found that the governor works will on about 90% of the setups that I have tried but you do need to set them up correctly. If you use throttle curves or a eMultiGov they are definitely the best way to go. Also if you live in the US you get very fast repair service and excellent tech. Support.

Kontronik has the best ESC’s but in the US they are a crazy high price.

Scorpion has some nice looking ESC’s but I have not tried them. Does anyone know how long it takes to get a Scorpion ESC repaired? Do they have a US repair facility or do you have to send them back to China?

I'm using the 90amp scorpion esc on my 500 and really like it. There were complaints in the past about them running very hot and the soft start was to harsh but I'm not seeing any of that. It has a switching bec built in so it's pretty small because there's no need for a big heat sink. I don't ever notice mine runing much above ambient temps.

Jazz is the best for the money but might break the bank. Castle creation isn't as expensive and their governor mode isnt bad. Not quite Jazz quality, but if you must have a governor mode then Castle creation is a good option.

If you don't mind using Vcurve, and CC is still too expensive for you... HobbyWing will suffice. You could always use the stock Align ESC that comes with the kit, but not on governor mode.

First impressions on the scorpion 90amp commander ESC are positive. Easy to set up, running temp at ambient.

Another vote for the Castle Creations ESC, been using it for two years with no problems on my 450. The only thing I have never been able to get working is the governor mode so I just use flat curves which seems to work fine.

Just curious, you're recommending an ESC that you can't make work??? I certainly wouldn't buy the castle creations on your recommendation.

Did you read my full post. The ESC works fine. Only the governor mode on it does not. I have not heard of many people successfully running the governor with the CC. Many people don't mind (such as myself) as FLAT transmitter throttle curves work just fine.

Or, maybe you should have quoted the following:
with no problems on my 450
Well, I consider items a problem such as overheating, crashes caused by it and so on. I don't consider governor mode a problem.

Keep picking away at my post.

Castlecreations are the best ESC`s. For the most part they are made in the USA. They have the best customer service in the buisiness.
And they just work. I use from the Phoenix 35amp , the PH 45amp, PH 60amp, PH80amp and the PH 45HVamp and the PH 85HV amp. They are the best on earth in my opinion.

You obviously have not got one with a gov mode set up right. I used to feel the same way until I saw finless bobs video and tried it out.

Imagine the same exact head speed though out the duration of your flight instead of a steady decrease in head speed as you get with throttle curves.

give it try I think you will like it

Governors
You will have more consistent maneuvers if you have a constant headspeed all the time. It’s also much easier to get 3D perfected because the flight characteristics will not be changing as the battery runs down. A governor will make you a much better 3D flyer.

If your ESC does not have a good governor there is no need to get rid of it. Just get an external governor. The two that I have tried that are tuned for EP flying are the Aerospire eMultiGov and the Youngblood ATG V3 (the V1 and V2 do not have EP software). Both are excellent and very easy to setup.

With the eMultiGov you set three headspeeds with a small programmer.

With the ATG you can use the governor menu on your transmitter to set the headspeed for the various flight modes. Most helicopter transmitters include this feature.
