Guys,

I have been receiving email from this one guy who are are interested in getting into AP and asked me all kind of question regarding regulations for RC AP Business. Apparently, he have been reading a lot of FAA infos. I am not sure what he intentions are. Just to warn me, or to scare me away from the RC AP Business.

He sent me these links and comments

---Secret Service and FAA in Washington DC ran sting operation on RC helo
----They are no longer in business.

---You need to be a pilot to operate a UAS.

http://www.faa.gov/aircraft/air_cer..._faq/uas_qa-op/

Anyone know if this is really happening and applying to us in USA at this moment??

I'd like to see if anyone has any info regarding this matter... seems like the FAA is trying to get a piece of our pie... and shamefully so... based on my recent experiences working in the airline industry, they have bigger fish to fry..

don't be shy,
post this guy!

gee...I'm a poet!
Has he just started emailing you blindly without you approaching him at all? If he has, make him public. If he didn't care about emailing you he violated your privacy from the start. Who is he?

Dear Mr. FAA,

I'm a fukin hobbyist!

I got this quote off your site Mr. FAA:

Based on how I operate, do I need an experimental certificate for my UAS?

"No, if you are a hobbyist and intend to fly your model aircraft in accordance with the guidance in Advisory Circular 91-57, Model Aircraft Operating Standards."

Be a hobbyist. Don't advertise. Don't put banners all over your car, home, office, etc. Don't promote your website. Don't toot your horn. Just take pictures for fun through 'word of mouth'.

Get up, shoot, and get the fuk out!

This has only been going on for a couple of years. We (the RCAPA) have been publicly trying to mount a defense against impending regulation, so it can’t be said that it was a secret.

The tuna fish is ready for the can…

The rotary wing crowd will have a very difficult time complying with what is on the table. (That could be very well by design.) I have tried to enlist the help of the community just as recently as asking for help with a video and developing an industry code of practice.

We all know how that turned out…

I'm a commercially rated full-scale helicopter pilot as many of you know...and the truth is that 90% of you could fly circles around me ALL DAY LONG with RC helis. Requiring a full-scale rating to fly an RC is RIDICULOUS. Maybe they can come up with an RC rating...but that will probably be a long time coming...given the FAA's propensity for just 're-hashing' old regs instead of writing new code.

That said...in the mean time...I'm also a certified instructor and that means I can 'act' as PIC even when I'm not the 'sole manipulator of the controls'...IE...I can sit there and 'supervise'...and if the 'student' drives us into the ground it's my fault

What I'm getting at (shamelessly because I'm unemployed) is that for a very reasonable fee I'd be glad to be on site as your PIC. (I realize it gets foggy when doing commercial operations and 'instructional' flights...but there are always loopholes)

When in doubt...auto out

I have spoken with federal officials about security concerns regarding RC helis.
They are freaked out about them and it relates to this incident....

http://www.mahalo.com/flying_penis_Gary_Kasparov

Considering that the politician involved is the opposition to Vlad Putin and therefore has the scheduled life expectancy of a fruit fly this incident sent ripples of concern through the protective services community.
While the event was humorous it could just as easily have been the end of Mr. Kasparov.
Notice every one was laughing.....except the security detail.

Given a recent well-publicised incident involving a pair of shoes, federal agents are in the process of drafting new legislation banning shoes.

Tony,

I get your point and they are being reactive (or maybe OVER reactive) but putting myself in their "shoes" I can see why this freaks them out.
The art here is in addressing real concerns without stepping on honest operators necks in the process. Something the feds simply suck at.

This sort of activity goes back to the 1980's.
Back then a group got busted for using RC planes to smuggle nose candy across the Mexico/US border.
They set up a relay of several pilots with TXes and passed the plane off to each other.

The larger point is that anything can will be abused by a few stinkers out there and it will tend to sour things to some degree for the honest folks.

Perhaps it is time to invite the Feds to set their priorities based on ACTUAL terrorist activity... not perceived possibility.

Perhaps if they take a look at the multi-thousand pound weapons delivery capability of Ryder rental trucks.... and worry less about the "handful of pounds" capability that we have.... it might be a good start to dealing with reality.

You need a license to rent a Ryder truck.
