Just a hunch Charley but without data or feedback from customers, won't know for sure.

The first person you and I know had EMI/EMC problems went thru 5 HV85's and another brand ESC too. He's been known to break a flybar too (in flight) ANIMAL he is.

i have heard that the futaba sensors are sensitive to noise from motors. however your problem is more likely to be the servo motors rather than it coming down the wires near the motor.

the 601 came with a metal plate to mount under the gyro. might be worth a try?

Hey guys,

It isn't a vibration issue as this interference is still there when the gyro is not even attached to the helicopter.

I have hooked up a complete seperate circuit off the heli so all the cables and such are no where near the heli which is eliminating possibilities to do with the frame (The frame is black btw) yet there is still interference. I have tried 2 other motors and they both seem to have the same effect albeit the effect was alot more suttle as those motors were not as strong.

I will fashion a metal plate today and try that, I dont believe it is noise from the servos as when I am testing it off the heli the problem still exists even when the gyro is no where near the bird.

We had a good play with this heli yesterday arvo and have come to the conclusion that the interference is definately coming from the Scorpion motor.

We tested 2 other motors (scorpion 1100 and turnigy) and both gave the same kind of interference but only when the gyro was placed very close. Almost touching.

With the 4020 there is interference up to about 50cm from the motor.

It would be interesting to hear from someone else that has the 4020 fitted with a 401 gyro.

Well maybe it is a bad bearing, as was suggested earlier. I know the motor is new, but maybe the bearing was bad to start out with, or the bearing was damaged during assembly. Just a thought.

We have tried 2 other motors and they also interfere with the gyro but on a smaller scale when up close to them, I presume that all motors will interfere with the 401 to some extent however since the 4020 has alot stronger magnets alot more interference will be generated.

I tried making a thin brass box for the gyro and grounding that but it had no effect so at the moment I have left it mounted where I has it previously on the boom.

I would have though someone out there would be running a 4020 and a 401 that could comment on whether they are getting interference as well.

Well you cannot block a magnet field but using a grounded faraday cage. The windings are causing the magnetic field that is causing the problem not the perm. magnets. have you tried a difference ESC/BEC yet ?

I am running the spartan, but if I get a chance I will stick a 401 on there and see what happens.

Im running the scorpion esc, and 1390 motor, but the jr 770 gyro mounted up front. Works fine.

did a quick test.....
grabbed a 401, plugged it in. Connected a 3s batt so it would activate the low voltage alarm, and constantly beep (pulses to the motor)

If I place the gyro next to the motor it would very gently pulse the servo at the same frequency that the motor pulses. Move the gyro away slowely, and it would completly stop the servo pulsing at about ~40mm away.

I expected this. Many times if you place the gyro on a servo, you get the same effect. Quite normal. Theres a good 100mm to the frint gyro mount from the motor, so I would expect the 401 to work fine.

How far away from the 4020 1390 motor do you need to hold the gyro for it to stop interfering?

So its only the tail servo pulsing, does it still pulse once the motor is running?

very strange situation indeed.

fwiw...

Not to beat a dead horse, but have you tried a ferrite ring close to the gyro with about 4 turns through it??

John.
