The Muslims have been fighting this war for over a thousand years! They don't want peace, they themselves state VERY clearly they want the destruction of Israel and the Jewsish people
The logical solution to that area's particular brand of religious insanity would be considered by most to be politically-incorrect and extreme -- but based on that sanest of social axioms, The Greatest Good For The Greatest Number, that 'solution' would be the appropriate thing to do under the circumstances.

To walk into a crowded pub, watch the people there, could be anyone, plant a bomb and leave, then detonate it takes a very special type of person, hate filled or madman i agree. But not one particular race.Is a war won a victory or does it produce a defeated side waiting for the next opportunity to have a pop.World war 1and 2 show this to be the case but we did not kill all the Germans after the 2nd because they are not all to blame, only a handfull. Some Germans thought killing all the Jews was the Final solution because a minority had one particular opinion about them.Just goes to show how a minority will continue to influence the masses if you go about it in the right way.

My vote goes to the well lead country, but i suppose we all will have different opinions on issues and will vote for the Government that best represents those that you agree with, but what difference does my opinion matter anyway,i am just an ordinary bloke with an independant view on things.Just the same as anyone else. The Internet may be the curse of governments all over the world trying to "SHAPE"peoples thinking in years to come.

The (uncensored) Information Age has (and will continue to) set many on this planet free. Knowledge is power, and always will be. What China and a few other governments do to limit (censor) their citizens' access is despicable. Hopefully such illogical, counter-productive practices will end as time passes.

Gimbal,

You a socialist? You said " The Greatest Good For The Greatest Number" do you really think that is the answer....what about the rest of the number that disagrees with you? Stalin, Polpot, Hitler, and yes even the Muslin leaders would say the same thing. They always have "the greatest good (as defigned by them of course) for the greatest good of the people in mind" the rest they usually kill. Governments are at best a necessary evil, men do not need them to live in peace and most that live in peace do so in spite of them.

It logically follows that, overall, we are a seriously flawed species -- destined to often repeat our numerous social, moral and ethical failings ad nauseum.
Yeah, especially you here on RR..

Sorry -- I forgot that such high moral concepts are over some folks' heads.
You a socialist?
Nope.
They always have "the greatest good (as defigned by them of course)
'As defined by them' cannot be thought of as being true to the fundamental concept, thus none of the evil leaders you listed were really interested in 'the greatest good for the greatest number' for their people. Obviously.

This concept has also been worded as "The Needs Of The Many Outweigh The Needs Of The Few". Can any sane human being who understands English deny the ultimately civilized logic contained within those phrases?

Answer: No.

Failing to see the logic in such a sound moral concept means only one of two things: Either you don't understand the language well enough to comprehend those sentences' true meanings, or you are morally and ethically insane.

fwiw...

Such is level one thinking...See Thomas Sowell for an explanation...

"The needs of the few" is the logical stumbling block of socialistic thinking...If you believe in hive mentality, it is a true statement...If you believe in free will and individuality, it is false...I leave it t the individual to make a peronal decision about the correctness of that thinking, but human history shows we are pack, not hive...'Course, if Seven of Nine were in the mix, I might change me mind...
I frequently debate points like tis with a college prof. at UCI...Makes me happy I was educated long ago...

So what you're saying is that because a sentence containing sound logic for civilized cultures gets paraphrased in a popular movie, that lessens its value?

Brilliant!

Gimble,

Yes, absolutely I can Gimbal. As Dot said if you are of the hive mentallity or believe in the communist dogma then you fit right in. But as a former millitary guy I can tell you that our creed was to never leave a man behind. On many occasions troops go into harms way to rescue one guy at the risk and often the lives of many, but they do that because the life of the one, the individual, is precious. I guess you would just leave them behind...for the greater good. In your way of thinking slavery is justified as long as the greater good for workers for the society is met and production is cheap. In your way of thinking the Nazi eugenics programs for the improvement of the race through elimination of the inferior races, mentally retarded, sick, "or different" is justified, after all that is what Hitler was striving for, a master race of superior individuals........the greater good, in whos eyes....be careful....you may be the next "few". By the way in the hive mentallity when ants want to cross water they build a bridge with the bodies of fellow ants so that the greater majority can cross, they don't chose this fate for themselves, it is not of free will, and thats what seperates us from the animals...we can decide for ourselves.

The only more accurate cartoon would be the baby carraige filled with dynamite being pushed into a crowd of school kids by its mom.
After all, according to Gimbal the "few" that are murdered and used as human shields by HAMAS do so for the greater good, right, and the rest of the muslims that blow up innocent women and children do so for the good of the many "for the greater good" of islam.

Funny how when the AP reports casualties and deaths, it says that 1000 Palestinians have been killed. 500 of them civilians. (example)

They never mention the terrorists in casualty counts. Or, Hamas militants (terrorists)

Are you insane, Tarmack, or is it just that you don't understand the language well enough to comprehend those sentences' true meanings?

In those phrases, "The Greatest Number" and "The Many" do not refer to the greatest number of a select, biased and/or corruptly-led group -- they refer to ALL humans -- or even more logically to all living things on the planet.

Ever see the M*A*S*H episode where -- on the crowded hospital bus -- the Vietnamese mother had to smother her own baby to keep it from crying and revealing their location to the enemy? Terrible. Horrifying. The stuff of PTSS and lifelong nightmares for all who survived -- but despite the horror of it, in that scenario it was the right thing to do save the greatest number of lives.

It's a tough concept to grasp, but it is in fact the most sound axiom for civilized beings to base survival decisions upon. Those who cannot or will not see the stark, bare-bones logic of this higher moral concept are destined to make non-optimum choices when 'push' comes to 'shove' during their lives.

Open them peepers and smell the coffee -- or drive blind while half asleep.

Your choice.
