10c internal antenna mod
Thought this might interest you Fasst guys. If you don't care about using 72Mhz, it appears to be a simple matter to run the Fasst signal up through an internal antenna and ditch the stupid antenna out the back that comes stock. Personally, I'm doing it with a Spektrum module, but I took some pics of the inside of the Fasst module out of curiosity.

Here's a copy/paste of the post I just made over in the Spektrum area:
These pics are the inside of the 10c. It's easy to get apart, just 4 screws, and there's nothing attached to the back of it, so it's easy to work on (compared to the X9303). You can see that there is plenty of room to route the antenna cable internally. I'm planning on drilling a small hole for it on the side of the indent that the module goes into, as shown in the second pic.

Now here's the inside of the 2 modules. First the Spektrum, then the Fasst. Both have the same antenna connector on them, which raises an interesting possibility. With a little ingenuity on how the case on the module is cut, it would be possible to quickly swap between Fasst and Spektrum both going through the internal antenna by simply unplugging the cable from one module and going into the other. Or, if you are a Fasst guy, you can cut the big antenna and hump off the back of the Fasst module and run the signal up inside like Futaba should have done, getting rid of the stupid Futaba antenna setup.

Either way, after taking it apart, I can see this is a simple mod. My antenna will be in tomorrow, and I'll get it done. I'm not sure how to fasten the antenna in the transmitter, I believe it just has a big nut on the bottom so it'll drop in and tighten up, and I'll lose 72mhz ability, but gain the slick form factor of an integrated 2.4 solution.

Here's a link to the antenna, I believe it'll work fine with Fasst as well as the connector is the same, and I'm guessing that Fasst and Spektrum both use 2db gain antennas (which the CX2 antenna is, as are all the Spektrum antennas). http://www.readyheli.com/EFLB1058_T..._p/eflh1058.htm

You can also get Futaba TP/TK module cases for a few bucks that will fit the hole perfectly. Presumably the 7C ball and antenna is a perfect match. This violates the FCC rules and regulations and is therefore illegal, etc.

Be warned that the U.FL connector is only good for 30 insertions. Changing modules back and forth is a really bad idea.

Personally, I have no intention of ever changing, it's just going to be Spektrum for me, but it's certainly good to know that there is a limit on that connection. I thought it might interest the people using Fasst since personally, I wouldn't even buy a 10c for 2.4 use with the horrible antenna solution that Futaba provides.Nick Crego

It's ugly, but you don't look at the antenna while flying.

Hirose is the originator of U.FL but there are now clones.

If anyone is thinking about doing this, it's worked perfectly for the last month or so. However, I noticed the other day on my 700N that I had a little bit of swash dance that I couldn't get rid of. I fired up the Evo (also CCPM), and saw the same thing.

For the sake of experimenting, I threw the FASST module and receiver in the 700, and the dance was gone, even on the slower 7ch receiver. Although I like the Spektrum tech and receivers better, I like the 10c transmitter enough to make a switch to the FASST receivers.

So, I've pulled the Spektrum module and hooked up the FASST module to the internal wiring and antenna that I used with the Spektrum and it works fine thorugh that antenna. I'm going to go to the field and do a good range test and test flight, and once that works out, I'll cut the antenna etc off the back of the FASST module.

Just test flew it and did the maiden on my Protos in front of the house. Going through the internal antenna from the Blade CX2, it range checks far enough out that I couldn't see the heli moving any more, I was 120 paces out, 30 is what it calls for in a powered down range check. That's with the antenna pointed 90 degrees tot he heli, with it pointed straight at it, it faded out around to 100 mark.

Interestingly, my x9303 straight out of the box only got 60 paces with the antenna pointed at the heli, and I also ran out of eyesight before range with it 90deg.

So, the FASST module is being cut apart in a few minutes to remove the antenna and hump from the rear, and turning the 10c into what Futaba should have made it from the factory.

It looks exactly like it did with the Spektrum module, except there is a Fasst sticker on the Module instead of Spektrum. Here's the pics I took when I dropped the Spektrum module in.

I flew 6 flights with it today, 1 with my Evo, 1 with the 700N, and 4 on the Protos, and it works perfectly. Much nicer package than Futaba provides.

please explain. Are you saying that you can switch between the 2.4ghz module and FM module only a maximum of 30 times ?!. Sounds kinda dumb and restrictive. Why is that ?

No, the small connector on the end of the antenna is only good for a certain number of connections before it would have to be replaced. These aren't connections that you'd normally be using with a standard module system.Nick Crego

I dunno, but when I researched this mod, I read that it was the same as the Spektrum antennas, so if you an find that spec, you'll have your answer.

If anyone is interested in my radio, I just listed it for sale, I found a great deal on a 12Z and moved my stuff to it.

I probably get 3 or 4 pms a week from people asking about it on various forums. At least some of them have done it. There isn't any advantage other than appearance, and ease of using a case or transmitter tray. Functionally the radio is the same if you don't care about using anything other than 2.4.Nick Crego

Don't just put any old aerial on there ie wi-fi as the windings in the aerials can vary which could cause the TX IC to over heat and cause range problems and possible failure. Eury's set up as he has proved is fine.

Looks good, but isn't the antenna meant to be 90 deg to the face of the tranny (up, down or sideways) for the best rx reception?
